Great question asked by millions of Americans!
I have a credit repair company that works on my team for all of my buyers. If you can not find one, I can certainly recommend. I even tell my buyers with 600 credit scores to go through the credit repair because it will raise their credit 80-100 points thus qualifying them for a lower interest rate saving them THOUSANDS over a 30 year mortgage.
I did it myself.
Good luck, hope this helps!

wiskytango - a credit repair company is something you might want to explore down the road but there is no reason to take that step (and major expense) before you've had a $17 credit report ordered and analyzed by a mortgage loan officer.
I find that many consumers don't have nearly as bad of credit as they think - although some do. :)
The point is that you may very well qualify for a home loan right now but you won't know that if you call a credit repair company and pay them their $895 or whatever fee they want. They certainly aren't going to say "hey! don't pay us, you qualify for a home loan right now."
Keep in mind that credit "repair" companies can only remove items that are incorrectly reported on your report - they can not remove legitimate unpaid collections, chargeoffs, or other derogatory items that you do in fact owe.
Call a loan officer and tell them you suspect you have a credit issue. Ask if they are willing to help you get the credit report and analyze it to see if you qualify within the next 6 months. If that doesn't work, then maybe consider credit "repair."
