A discount point is 1% of the mortgage loan. Customers can pay discount points up front to reduce their interest rate.
On the interest rate question... it really depends on your credit score, LTV, program, loan amount, etc... You could fill out a Zillow loan request while they are still free and see if your quote is competitive.

They are for consumers with a credit rating of 720 or higher and a 20% or higher down payment. If a lender does not offer a national rate, a state rate may be shown next to the lender's name. For example, 'Bank name (CA)'.
