Depends on your area but price per square foot is only one of many factors to determine value. You can have two identical sized homes, one with a spectacular view and one backing to a street in the same neighborhood with $100,000 difference in price.

impossible question to answer as explained.

I will try to be a little more specific in terms of the South Shore Ma. for new construction (If you own the land, if their is no infrastructure to deal with, if house is set 50' off road on a form A lot). To build an average house using average materials the construction cost are from $95 - $105 per sq ft. (This tells you nothing I'm sure but this is something we can actually know).

The average price per square foot depends on where the home is located.  A home in a rural area will obviously have a much lower average than in a urban area.

Janhh,
Dollars per square foot is an interesting number but by itself is useless.  I sold a small starter home for a higher price per square foot than a 5700 square foot luxury home with a view.
When using similar aged homes, of similar size, location and quality this begins to take on more meaning.  Using this as an average across the city is like saying how much are tomatoes?  Do you mean Roma tomatoes, on the vine, beefsteak or heirloom?
If you're trying to get an idea of your homes value there are better ways.  The best is having a great local agent provide a market analysis for you after viewing your home.

Need a location to get an accurate # for you... the more detailed you can be the better... instead of just city and state, try to provide the neighborhood or zip code(s). With that, any agent worth their salt will be able to help you.
