Yes, claiming your home and adding your own photos is the best way. Otherwise, I have also seen photos that are 5-6 years old on Google & Zillow.

Cloudless urban areas usually get their aerial photos updated more often then cloudy rural areas I noticed - just be patient.

The default photographs, satellite view, aerial view and street view come from various sources. Google hasn't announced an update of street view in the US when I last checked, satellite view can vary - mine is from Aug 2011. Aerial view of my home comes from bing and is about six years old, but that varies also.
