I'm moving, is it better to rent or to take over payments on a pre-foreclosure?

I am looking to relocate to the Los Angeles area. I have been sifting through Craig's List ads for apartments for rent. I found some that are pretty great - but I also constantly stumble upon ads for foreclosed and pre-foreclosed homes. Is it REALLY possible for one to take over the mortgage payments, have no credit check, and eventually own a home that could be equal or much better than a rented apartment? Being 23 years old - this is something I am very interested in looking into - but I did hear a lot of it is a scam. Can anyone shed some light on the situation?

I sign up for this program I guess where preforeclose house were being offered but I really dont know how this work like what terms to ask for and how to make a deal with these home owner I sent out these letter saying that Im interested in buying there home by taking over the morgage payments I dont know even if any of these letter will get a reply and if someone replies what do i do next

Is this house in foreclosure? If so, or not what are closing costs and can it be reduced in price or will the owner take anything of requested price with a 50 percent deposit in cash within a week.
