I move into the uggliest (yes, ugly with two G's) house on the block. All my new neighbors tell me:
"vacant for ten years"
"Such a sweet old lady lived here, you know her parents built most of the houses on this street"
"Great to see someone bringing that place to life!"
"Hey, you up on the roof, re-roofing this old piece, it looks great!"
"All the work your putting into that house is really gonna help the whole area"
" Yeah knob and tube is dangerous.....WHAT! you've replaced it already!!!!! It's only been a few months since you moved in?"

Yes, we have worked our butts off getting this place livable again. In a very short amount of time, too. New roof, re-finished original hardwood floors, re-wired, bathroom is almost remodeled and the yard is clean......at least we thought the yard was clean? Apparently there is a was a 4 foot square patch of weeds on the side of my new house that regrew rather quickly after I weed-whacked the whole jungle down when we moved in.
The City of Santa Rosa decided I should pay a $210 fine for having such a hideous weed patch. The house has been vacant for TEN YEARS! Do you know how tall weeds grow in TEN YEARS? TALL!!!!!! I've hauled two dumpsters full of garbage, weeds, rotting termite infested wood and the heap of old moldy carpet from the backyard away. Then the some "Real Man" wannabe comes along from SRFD and says "oh look weeds! They get a ticket, Eeh Hee HEE HEEEEEE Snort!" Fire danger my gym shorts. We move in and start kickin' ass on this derelict eyesore of a house and get a ticket for a friggin' weed patch a few weeks after moving in...... BRILLIANT!

3 replies Sun, 16 Sep 2007 06:37:00 GMT http://www.zillow.com/advice-thread/Weed-and-Rubbish-Abatement/6416/ 2007-09-16T06:37:00Z
