Mayor Bloomberg, Police Commissioner Kelly and Department of Design and Construction Commissioner Burney today broke ground on the new 121st Police Precinct Station House in the Graniteville section of Staten Island. The station house, a $63.6 million facility, is the first new precinct on Staten Island since 1962. Major felony crime on Staten Island has fallen 28 percent over the past eight years.

At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park will be almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in over 100 years. The transformation of what was formerly the world's largest landfill into a productive and beautiful cultural destination will make the park a symbol of renewal and an expression of how our society can restore balance to its landscape.

In addition to providing a wide range of recreational opportunities, including many uncommon in the city, the park's design, ecological restoration and cultural and educational programming will emphasize environmental sustainability and a renewed public concern for our human impact on the earth.

While the full build–out will continue in phases for the next 30 years, development over the next several years will focus on providing public access to the interior of the site and showcasing its unusual combination of natural and engineered beauty. While nearly 45 percent of the site was once used for landfill operations, the remainder of the site is currently composed of wetlands, open waterways, and unfilled lowland areas. The tops of the landfill mounds themselves offer spectacular vistas of the expansive site, as well as views of downtown Manhattan.

Need to search your site for info/articles/etc. on impact of sponsor holdings in well-established condo in prime NYC neigborhood. Unable to find reputable/known lenders for my refinance (from ARM to 30yr fixed, w/small cash out), low LTV. This was not an issue at all 5 years ago when I bought. Now apparently known banks are using 10% sponsor ownership as cut-off point for financing in buildings like mine.

SI Hotel Holding filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this week in an effort to stave off a foreclosure sale on the Staten Island Hotel. The 187-room Graniteville hotel is one of several projects by SI Hotel Holding principal Leib Puretz that are currently in foreclosure, according to the Staten Island Advance. Puretz is reportedly in foreclosure for over $86 million in loans for projects planned for development in the borough. The Staten Island Hotel has approximately 50 to 99 creditors, according to documents filed in federal court, and has liabilities of over $10 million, the Advance reported. [SI Advance]

The Staten Island Bluebelt is an award winning, ecologically sound and cost-effective storm water management for approximately one third of Staten Island's land area. The program preserves natural drainage corridors, called Bluebelts, including streams, ponds, and other wetland areas. Preservation of these wetland systems allows them to perform their functions of conveying, storing, and filtering storm water. In addition, the Bluebelts provide important community open spaces and diverse wildlife habitats. The Bluebelt program saves tens of millions of dollars in infrastructure costs when compared to providing conventional storm sewers for the same land area. This program demonstrates how wetland preservation can be economically prudent and environmentally responsible.

The Paint Program is an important part of the Graffiti Free NYC, and we welcome your interest in joining us in our efforts to beautify New York City. Application kits for the Mayor's Paint Program can be obtained from the Mayor's Community Affairs Unit by using the paint program application, or by calling 311.

For its approved graffiti-removal project, an organization is permitted an allocation of up to 26 gallons of paint, 26 roller sleeves, and 12 roller frames. Request more supplies than you will need for your project.

Note: Interested community-based organizations must submit a graffiti-removal waiver for the site in need of cleaning before requesting supplies. Please call the Mayor's Community Affairs Unit at 212-788-7418.

I just want to give a shout-out to my hometown neighborhood, Ditmas Park, as being the next Brooklyn eatery hot-spot.

I would especially recommend The Farm's sunday brunch menu. Their morning blood mary helps you handle the hair of the dog that bit you.

YIDDISH ADS ON SCHOOL BUSES

Two cash-starved schools in the Borough Park area have allowed a religious textbook publisher to turn their yellow buses into mobile billboards.

The banner, which appears on the sides of nine buses, shows a smiling boy holding a religious book called a Chumash. The Yiddish caption, referring to the publisher, reads: "Everyone goes to school with Oz V'Hadar."

Chumash is another name for the Torah - a bedrock of Judaism and one of the first texts taught at a yeshiva. The ad hawks an updated and illustrated edition.

The Borough Park schools - Chasan Sofer and Yeshiva Yagdil Torah - are private with about 400 students each. More yeshivas may follow suit.
