We are talking about Vallejo here. The City went into bankruptcy just to rip off the Police and Fire Unions. I'm sure they aren't voluntarily reducing anything.

Edtilton - That depends on what are are making the calculation for.

If you are purchasing a new home then the new assessed value will based on the New Purchase Price. The common estimate used is 1.25% of the purchase price. Some Cities and Counties have additional adjustments. If you are purchasing you may still be required to pay the old rate until the county can readjust it at which point you would get a refund.

If you own a home and think your taxes should be lower because of sinking values, your property taxes may or may not be eligible for a reduction. Due to Prop 13 which limits increases in property taxes, when you purchased you home will have the most impact.

If the county has your home assessed for greater than the current value they may reduce your property taxes. Some of the counties have done the automatically others require you to fill out a reassessment form from the County Assessors Office.
