I think auto-tweeting is okay, but probably should be kept to 1/4 of all posts, because the whole point of Twitter is to use as a communication tool.

I know we post Tweets for "one-way" messages, but the last 9 months I've been using as a conversation tool.

Have I received business from using Twitter and Facebook? Yes, I have, but it was from establishing relationships and from continuing conversations.

I admit, it isn't easy taking time to use these tools, and I agree with Matt Johnson, it takes commitment.

But in a year, the communication tool might change from Twitter to something else. I believe it's understanding about being the publishing source and the center of communication.

I fully agree with Em Wallace. I think it's very pointless to have a personal account but for business to it's got some valid points if you can break into it which so far not many have been. If you become the point of contact for people seeking resources around your community/city and provide free newsletters about your market I believe you will see results from twitter but it does take immense amount of discipline and consistency.

The topic should specify for personal use or for business. There's really not a need to have a personal twitter account. No one cares what you have to say unless you're a celebrity. Social media is most effective for WARM leads when you a) Give something (anything!) away for free b) When you cross-promote (leave comment on blogs) c) Aren't trying to sell in every update you make (spammy and insincere) d) Are targeting a local market e) Actually reply to people who follow or comment. People are resistant to robots you know!

I haven't received any business from twitter and think it may have run it's newness course.

I started doing seo on my own sites in sonoma county and am ranked on the first pages for anything Sonoma County or Santa Rosa Homes, Shorts Sales, Mls etc and receive 10,000 Unique Visitors a Month. More than I can or will want to keep up with.
