It is usually the amount of the sale itself except in cases of <a href="http://www.zillow.com/homes/for_sale/fore_lt/">foreclosure</a> where it can be the amount that the bank bought the house back for (mortgage+HELOC). You can also call a local <a href="http://www.zillow.com/directory/real-estate-agents/">realtor</a> to ask for the sold price off of the MLS by address. They have that information available also if you want to double check it.
