We prefer things that are safe and familiar. We are happy with a degree of certainty in the results of our actions, even if they do not always serve us best. We resist challenges if they threaten our comfort zone. In short: we do not like change. However, whether we like it or not, change is all around us, non-stop. In fact, change is the only constant. To grow and evolve, we must change. Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States, once said, "When you are finished changing, you are finished."

In today's business climate and in the real estate industry especially, change is no stranger. For example, think about the way you communicate with clients and other agents, the impact of the Internet, and the rise of different client/agent relationships. It matters less whether you believe, or even like the changes that you see coming. What matters is how you are adapting to them, because you really have to embrace and understand that regardless how diligently you prepare, your business will probably not be exactly the same one year from now.

However. the ability to change has absolutely nothing to do with age. Many young people tend to think "change" is something that only happened the past 10 years. They are wrong. The words "change is the only constant" were written down by the Greek philosopher Heraclitus (535-475 BC). The agents you call "older farts" may still be around because they adopted to change their entire professional career already, while out of 100 new and tech savvy agents that give the real estate profession a try, 80% is gone within a year. After all, knowing everything about how to Twitter does not make you a good real estate professional. If I was to select an agent to buy or sell my home, I would look for other qualifications than his or hers latest model iPod. Sorry for the lecture, and yes, I am what you may call an old fart.
Thu, 13 May 2010 00:04:00 GMT http://www.zillow.com/advice-thread/Why-are-the-older-R-E-Agents-SO-SET-in-their-ways-and-Grupmy-too-is-the-Internet-putting-them-out-o/340590/ 2010-05-13T00:04:00Z More pills, more pains, more ... http://www.zillow.com/advice-thread/Why-are-the-older-R-E-Agents-SO-SET-in-their-ways-and-Grupmy-too-is-the-Internet-putting-them-out-o/340590/ More pills, more pains, more illnesses, and less...well...ahem...you know.

Haiyooo!
