The house valve is usually found on the incoming water line at or near to the entry point of the water line into the house. It is used by the home owner to shut off the water to the entire house in case of a water line break, leak, or needed plumbing repair. The house valve is separate and downstream from the "street valve" or "(water) main valve", which is on the upstream (e.g. water main) side of the water meter. Commonly, there is a faucet (hose bib) immediately after the house valve. So, if you see a water line, on which there is an in-line valve (of either the gate valve or ball valve type), this is probably your house valve. In colder climates, where the water lines may freeze in winter, the house valve may be protected from the weather inside the house, in the basement, or within a burried or enclosed box.

However, not all homes are built with a house valve. This important $2 convenience is sometimes omitted from home construction, although it never should be. In such cases, one must call your water supply company to have your water turned off in an emergency or in order to complete plumbing repairs. A 20 minute delay can result in a lot of house flooding and thousands of dollars of damage. If your house does not have a house valve, install one.
