If your property is listed with a real estate broker, they may need to approve the changes. I am a flat fee MLS listing broker who is a member of the Realtors Multiple Listing Service for the Columbus area (called Columbus & Central Ohio Multiple Listing Service or CBR MLS), and we receive emails notifying us when the owner has changed information on a property we have listed.

Don't worry about contradicting Zillow, they make mistakes just like anyone else (perhaps even more, they have lots of data=lots of chances to make an error). I would definitely make the change, just in case a potential buyer sees the listing on Zillow, which is statistically unlikely, but possible.

I would do two things: claim your home (as you've been advised) and edit the facts.

Flag the house and alert Zillow to the discrepancy between their numbers and what the auditor's site says. Sometimes I suspect (as a non-Zillow employee) that data transfers are not perfect and numbers occassionally get jumbled.
