It's just political rhetoric. It's designed to make FBs and BleedingHearts feel all warm and fuzzy about their government, at least until after the elections. Anyone who is paying attention to the actual legislation of recent months will understand that few will be helped (the theoretical budgets might be big, but qualifying for assistance will thin the crowd dramatically), and home values will continue to fall. They must fall until they are within reach of normal incomes with traditional loans.

I agree that even if we dismiss these statements as pandering, it is annoying. Perhaps some PR guru has simply calculated that there's a net gain by saying those words, that is, it gets more votes from people that take it seriously than is loses by irritating the rest of us.

Why do so many talk about keeping people in their homes?

Because they don't want more people living on the streets blocking traffic and causing people to trip on the sidewalks, especially when they stand at the freeway on or off ramps asking for cash everyday. The local retail businesses don't like having such loiters around as it discourages their customers, and the customers go elsewhere.

And if more people are without a place to live? Guess what? They qualify for more government programs, and thus take more of the tax dollars. And then the end up using the emergency rooms of the hospitals instead of seeing their regular doctor, and they don't pay the bill per state law since the hosital is required to treat them anyway, so the hospitals have to charge other customers extra, which is passed on to the insurance companies, and then the insurance rates go through the roof, even for people that never go to the hospital nor the doctor!

Instead of talking about keeping people in homes they "financed", we should talk about providing YMCA type "youth hostile" group housing for families that are otherwised priced out of the market, at 40% of their salaries.

Can someone who has experience with loan modifications start a thread with "tips" .. This thread will be for people who can afford their mortgage, still employed but want to be included and deserve to be included in this bill that will most obviously be passed today. This thread would be for the prudent who are standing by and watching the "gamers" use the system.. Lets start talking about how the prudent and bill payers can benefit from this bill. Not just the imprudent and wall street.

I don't have the experience but maybe someone else does..

If other countries are so worried about our well-being and their own, why don't they buy up our bad debt?

Also, it my understanding that most people are against this bailout. People contacted their representatives and the support just wasn't there. The reps wanted it to pass, but they didn't want to vote for it. I think the average American doesn't really understand it and so is against it.

As for college being a big waste of money I would have to agree in many cases it is a big waste. Most could make a better living by going to a tech school and learning a skill. A lot of people getting a BS or BA just aren't making enough money to make the loan payments. There is a need for college, but we shouldn't assume it is the best path for everyone.

I haven't read the whole thread but RIGHT ON!!

Remember when you actually paid cash for school? Prices have absolutely SKYROCKETED since the inception of all the government sponsored student loans. Everyone and anyone can just sign up to get 50K in debt.

How many adults are still paying for their student loans? It's "free money" that cripples you when you leave school. It's a joke. If everyone stopped using the MASS amounts of credit, tuitions would be forced down and higher education would be more affordable. Plus, schools would really need to compete with each other since "real" money would be at stake. I think that's a great thing.

I'm all for "keeping people in their homes"...as long as the people, like my wife and I, who were priced right out of the market by greedy investors, greedy loan officers and flat out dumb people who thought they could afford a $420k house on a $40k/year household income, are taken into consideration.

But they outbid you... or they outbid someone! or did they ?
