Zillow Advice: Renter Rights - How do I know the home rental listing is not a scam if the owner claims he/she lives abroad? http://www.zillow.com/advice-thread/How-do-I-know-the-home-rental-listing-is-not-a-scam-if-the-owner-claims-he-she-lives-abroad/448324/ Zillow Advice | Zillow Real Estate You can go to a title company ... http://www.zillow.com/advice-thread/How-do-I-know-the-home-rental-listing-is-not-a-scam-if-the-owner-claims-he-she-lives-abroad/448324/ You can go to a title company website (for instance First American Title) and for a small fee find out who the owner of the property is. If you are not dealing with the owner, it could be a scam. I can tell you that I live abroad and have several rental properties in the US. I have a property manager and real estate agent. If you are not dealing with one of these, it is probably a scam, or at best, an unresponsive future landlord. Finally, I would never rent or buy something without seeing the inside first. A landlord wants to meet you and will have keys and will show you the house before renting. On the extreme rare case that a landlord is far away... If they are the kind that will not have someone meet to hand you the keys when they can not be a there then they are not going to be a good landlord when there is a problem. So on the miniscule chance that is a real landlord.... They arent one that you can rely on and I t would still be a mistake. But that is a scam... No doubt about it Thu, 30 May 2013 05:12:00 GMT http://www.zillow.com/advice-thread/How-do-I-know-the-home-rental-listing-is-not-a-scam-if-the-owner-claims-he-she-lives-abroad/448324/ 2013-05-30T05:12:00Z @PG: Everything ... http://www.zillow.com/advice-thread/How-do-I-know-the-home-rental-listing-is-not-a-scam-if-the-owner-claims-he-she-lives-abroad/448324/ @PG: Everything you describe says scam. It is too good a price to be true, the owner is abroad, wants money before keys. Please read Zillow's FAQ on rental scams (a link is at the top of every rental ad page). Please report it to Zillow by clicking on "report problem with listing" and making a choice in the drop down list. Thu, 30 May 2013 04:37:00 GMT http://www.zillow.com/advice-thread/How-do-I-know-the-home-rental-listing-is-not-a-scam-if-the-owner-claims-he-she-lives-abroad/448324/ 2013-05-30T04:37:00Z Hi, I am facing something ... http://www.zillow.com/advice-thread/How-do-I-know-the-home-rental-listing-is-not-a-scam-if-the-owner-claims-he-she-lives-abroad/448324/ Hi,

I am facing something similar and I am now more doubtful about the place. The only difference in my situation is that the apartment is in Menlo Park. He is asking for just $1000 for a 2 bedroom apartment and again he is asking for just a security deposit and he is assuring that he will send the keys via snail mail.

I got a long email saying he is a piano teacher and he is settling down with his wife in Manila. Did you go ahead with this thing ? I think its the same house owner and I want to tread carefully.

Thanks,
PG Thu, 30 May 2013 03:50:00 GMT http://www.zillow.com/advice-thread/How-do-I-know-the-home-rental-listing-is-not-a-scam-if-the-owner-claims-he-she-lives-abroad/448324/ 2013-05-30T03:50:00Z Red flag abound. ... http://www.zillow.com/advice-thread/How-do-I-know-the-home-rental-listing-is-not-a-scam-if-the-owner-claims-he-she-lives-abroad/448324/ Red flag abound. Consider it a scam and move on. Here's a link to Zillow's FAQ on Scams and fraud.

NEVER give a deposit before you've seen the place with someone in person, and never expect keys by mail to be valid.

And report it to Zillow

Mon, 25 Jun 2012 19:26:00 GMT http://www.zillow.com/advice-thread/How-do-I-know-the-home-rental-listing-is-not-a-scam-if-the-owner-claims-he-she-lives-abroad/448324/ 2012-06-25T19:26:00Z
