Zillow Advice: Home Improvement - Would Installing a really well designed raised bed vegetable garden add value to my home? http://www.zillow.com/advice-thread/Would-Installing-a-really-well-designed-raised-bed-vegetable-garden-add-value-to-my-home/449872/ Zillow Advice | Zillow Real Estate Unfortunately cosmetic things ... http://www.zillow.com/advice-thread/Would-Installing-a-really-well-designed-raised-bed-vegetable-garden-add-value-to-my-home/449872/ Unfortunately cosmetic things that are very specialied to the current home owner do not translate to the next. I may have 18 kids and put 10 swing sets in my back yard, that definitely have value, however the next person might have no kids, and want an open yard to entertain their friends. Therefore they would have to factor in the cost of removing the swing sets, thus detracting from that individuals perception of value for the home.

Your vegetable garden certainly has value, but not the kind that translates into dollars durring resale. If you can add an organic kitchen garden and a maybe a espallier fruit tree without eating up your backyard or using all of your outdoor gathering space, I think that you will not be hurt.

Backyard gardens are becoming more popular, but you have to make sure they fit into the overall aesthetic of the yard and are not a fish out of water in the center of the yard. You can put some plastic edging around the garden. Then if you decide to sell the house remove the plastic edging, get some grass seed and borrow a lawn roller. Then spread the grass seed, roll the ground smooth, put some straw on top, water often, and in a few weeks you would have grass growing there.
