Congratulations, pinks, your question touched a very serious nerve!

I defer to the various, previous discussions - you have a lot of good options to evaluate. But I agree 100% with getting light, and a lot of it, into that secondary space. Dark halls neither live not sell as well as bright halls.

Track lighting in your situation sounds good. Check out homedepot.com. I found some Murano glass types of track lighting that would probably work well in your situation. The halogen bulbs get very hot but provide focused light than I previously thought.

Track lighting is not in style. If you are planning on selling I would not add it. If you are not than do what makes you happy regardless of what other people say.

Track lighting is generally considered a "point source" and should not be used in a task area.... for what I can get from your posting, you have sufficient lighting for your laundry? if not, and you are expecting that the track will add light here.... please consider that the light will be behind you casting shadows onto the laundry (by standing between the light and your "task".) A worse problem then no light.

If you cannot recess into the ceiling, track lighting is nice to light art down a hallway, or wash walls with light.... but I always specify something that "goes away" on the ceiling.... not jumps out at you. If your ceiling is white.... add a long white track with small fixtures..... and light the entire wall down the hall.... these decorative tracks are too short to light your long hallway.

I would go with a Semi flush light or Some recessed lighting. Track lighting is dated and gives off terrible light. There are many options that are more stylish and give off better lighting. Here is a link check it out

I'm happy with it! It brightened up the space tremendously. Behind that door is the kitchen and the doors on the left are the laundry. I can actually SEE the laundry now! The other end of the hallway is a 1/2 bath and does have a large window which also aids in light. I'm still going to trim out the cork with molding to finish it off.
