Yes 150k combined couple should not probally be living in million dollar home unless they had alot of money to put down on a house. But if they locked in to a 30 year fixed rate at a number that they can afford why would they be out? The people that are in trouble are those that took teaser rates or int only loans and whose rates will be jumping.

There has obviously been financial overextension everywhere, in all "classes." However, nowadays, it seems that the "white collar" households tend to be the ones that are the most strung out, with little family time or attention to child rearing. The "blue collar" folks often seem to have a better grip on what is important (friends, family, simple pleasures), at least in my current hood.

So many people I met in the past five years are couples making say $150k plus, but buying absurdly expensive homes, close to a million dollars. They will be out on their asses as well.

Bus stop chatter yesterday: Woman a few doors down is telling us that she took a shuttle home from the car dealership since her car needed to stay there all day. The driver tells her as they drive into the hood that he lives just over on such and such street in here. Woman says to me: "how can someone like that afford to live in here?" The other neighbor says: "Yeah, I know them, his wife works at the nail salon on such and such street. They moved in 3-4 yrs ago before things got crazy, I am sure they can afford it fine". Gulp! Well, I couldn't resist and found their house online with the tax office: $595K in early 2005. Gulp gulp.

Sociologists should be looking at this new phenom: did the high prices in hoods raise the caliber of people moving in or actual decrease it. I mean really, when a new family moves in next to John and Sue Smith, and John Smith has a Law Degree he wonders how this couple can afford to live next door when she works at the local grocery store as a clerk and he delivers pizzas. So, Sue and John decide to get a subprime loan so they too can afford to move to a better neighborhood where they feel that their hood will reflect them better. What will the new shift be I often wonder. The white collar people may try and be able to hold on to things a little harder and longer, but in time they too will succumb.

Another heart string tug going on is the "poor immigrant" sob tale. That poor immigrants with bad engrish were victimized and taken advantage of. Now, that sort of race baiting is a bit insulting. First of all, they were targeted by people typically of the same heritage that they were. Secondly, I cannot for the life of me understand how giving somebody hundreds of thousands of dollars makes them a victim, particularly if they never pay it back. Maybe I'm repeating myself, but it is effing INSANE the idiotic sob stories I hear. Old widows, poor immigrants, and the handicapped have been targeted by the blood-sucking bankers and their lives have been destroyed. Because we all know how much money there is to make off of them.
