Our Sagaponack Lot 30 house is one of 34 homes commissioned by New York's developer Coco Brown to occupy a unique subdivision in the Hamptons in New York. This architect's vision and design of this home won the American Institute of Architects' Next LA Award. Stephen Kanner's mission embodies the new Hamptons' lifestyle and philosophy - "modesty of scale and economics" that respects and celebrates, through design, the natural setting. Lot 30 is a 2.1-acre site, square in shape. Our response was to raise our house on a 2' high wooden plinth to reach up for the sunlight through the dense forest. the budget pointed us toward a simple partie-a 20' wide double rectangle plan-form connected by a thin glass hall surrounding a central courtyard. The narrow width of the rectangular volumes economizes on structural costs due to repetition of beam and joist sizes while gaining openness and view along both longitudinal elevations. The two-story mass is wrapped in a reddish/orange stained cedar frame which pays homage to the spectacular fall color of New England. Within this frame, the lower floor predominantly houses the "public" spaces. Living room, dining room, kitchen, etc. All open up to the large surrounding deck via broad sliding doors. The second floor is accessed by either a sculptural stair that wraps around the two-story living room's fireplace or by a secondary spiral stair. This level has three bedrooms, each with a wide balcony. The house has radiant heating under its wooden floors and has dual glazed windows and sliding doors to guard against heat gain and loss. Rooms are easily cross-ventilated due to the structure's narrow width. Materials are few and restrained, e.g. wooden floors, aluminum and glass window walls, gypsum board and cedar paneled walls, a concrete fireplace, glass railings, cherry cabinets with black granite tops and limestone tiled bathrooms with limestone slab countertops and tub decks.Stunning 4 bedroom home with heated gunite pool melts into the landscape. Houses at Sagaponac is an acclaimed modernist development conceived by the late Harry J. #Coco# Brown with the assistance of architect Richard Meier. The project features a series of houses created by internationally recognized architects who were given the directive to achieve design excellence and push the envelope of contemporary architecture.
