First Dog will be a Portuguese Water Dog

portuguese-water-dog It’s official: the White House will have a Portuguese water dog as the First Dog, according to CNN’s Political Ticker. The Obamas are hoping to get a rescued Portuguese water dog and the time frame is probably around the end of April. Not sure if it will be a male or female, but they run about 40-50 lbs. I’m sure we’ll see a huge uptick in people adopting PWDs in the coming years.

If you have a home and kids, you know this is a big deal. Now, comes the naming of the First Dog. Ideas?

PLEASE!!! Someone tell the Obamas what people like about this breed. The PWD breeders that were interviewed at Westminster said this was not a good choice for a first dog. This dog is high energy and needs a firm experienced hand. Its like a dog that needs a mission or a job. Also this is a fairly rare breed and the chances of finding a rescue are slim to none. The Obamas should absolutely discuss this with a PWD breeder. This is exactly why dogs end up in rescue–the expectations of the family do not match the behavior or the dog.

A standard Poodle might be an option or altho I am not in favor of these high priced designer crosses, the Labradoodle or Goldendoodle were bred to reduce shedding issues but I am not really familiar with these.

Hedy, it’s the freakin’ president of the United States…don’t you think there is someone that will make sure the dog is trained and taken care of? Also, we know that finding a rescue pwd may be hard, but as a president that appeals to liberals, he has to at least “try” to find a rescue dog. When that fails, which they probably hope will, they will gladly make some breeder very happy to give them a dog, and the breeder will then make mad monies from the uptick in business. I don’t think it would be a good statement if the leader of the free world could not “handle” their dog, so I doubt you will see any problems…ever….with the dog.

I have a PWD. . . And yes he has high energy. . . in addition to having a sweet disposition, cuddly nature, and obedient temperament. He the perfect dog for a family and children. I cannot think of a more appropriate breed for the Obama family, and I know I know they will love the new member of their family.

After they get the dog, why don’t those who want to name the dog write down their name choice and put them in a hat, then someone pick the a name from the hat. NO CHEATING, HA HA!

I say we name him/her “Recession” or better yet “The GREAT Depression”! (O seems to like to call it the “great” depression). In any event, he won’t need a job or a roof over his head.

Hedy the goodledoodle may not be the right dog either. Dear friends and two of my honorary nieces lost theirs to a sudden undiagnosed ailment at 2 years of age. It’s not a real breed yet.
A mutt would be healthier and politically appropriate but wouldn’t satisfy the need for low allergens.
The important thing is to get those girls a dog after having to move to DC from their friends back in Chicago.

I also believe that a standard poodle would be a better suited pooch for the Obama family. We were not a dog family, adopted a standard poodle at 8 months of age. He is awesome!!Sooo smart.. basically housetrained himself! As with the PWD they do need regular grooming….but, are awesome loyal family dogs. My daughter LOVES Jack after having been fearful of dogs most of her young life. I think a cool name ffor the presenditial pooch would be LIBERTY (Libby… for a girl) and Boss if it is a male. They are awesome pets!! I often wish we could afford a 2nd! Go to Petfinder.com they have so many dear standard poos needing adoption. Rescues from puppy mills and owner surrenders….. WE LOVE OUR POO!!
