City Council Considering Steve Jobs’ Woodside Mansion, Again
Earlier this week, a California city council was once again considering a decision over the Jackling House, what some consider a property with historic significance that preservationists have rallied ’round while the home’s owner wants it torn down. The owner of the Jackling House? Steve Jobs, Apple founder and CEO.
The Jackling House is a 17,000+ sq ft mansion located at 460 Mountain Home Rd, Woodside, CA. It was designed in 1926 by architect George Washington Smith for Daniel C. Jackling, a millionaire who made his fortune in the copper refining process. Jackling was a regular in the San Francisco society pages and a collector of art. He lived in the house until his death in 1956.
Jobs purchased the Jackling House in 1984, and lived in it for about 10 years before renting it out. For the past decade, the home has been vacant and has fallen into disrepair and severe neglect (see these fascinating and eerie photos of the inside of the house). Jobs applied for a permit to demolish the property in February 2001, with the intent to build a new single-family home; however, the preservationists won that showdown, which went all the way to the California Supreme Court.
Arguments were heard by the council from both sides late into the night on Tuesday and no decision was reached. A final decision is expected at the next Woodside Town Council meeting, which is set for May 12. Stay tuned.
