I didn’t know that Dr. Rey was not board certified. How is that? You would think after all those ops he might be able to pass a test.

To don who states that “you would think that after all those ops [Dr. Rey] might be able to pass a test.” Being board certified requires more than just passing a test. It requires 2-3 years of fellowship training after 5 years of general surgery training. Only then are you a board ELIGIBLE plastic surgeon which he is not since he chose not to pursue a 2-3 year fellowship program. He was not even eligible to take the test, it’s NOT that he wasn’t smart enough to pass it. Instead, he chose to do a 1-year fellowship in breast/cosmetic surgery (oncoplastics) which is just fine and makes him more than qualified to perform plastic surgery procedures. He has completed at least 6 years total of surgical training and honestly, performing cosmetic procedures is much easier than resecting a colon for colon cancer which he did for 5 years as a general surgeon. Cosmetic surgery is cutaneous surgery and he is good at what he does. So please, unless you are a surgeon, don’t post comments that are completely unfounded. You have no idea what our training entails.

Took me long to all the remarks, but I really enjoyed the article. It proved to be very usable to me and I am sure to all the commenters here! It�s always good when you can not only be educated, but also involved! I�m sure you had fun saving this article.

I’m really surprised that he is not board certified. My husband is board certified ENT from Stanford and he can take the facial plastics board and be facial plastics certified if he wants to even though he hasn’t done a fellowship (because he did alot of surgeries at stanford). Almost all the good plastic surgeons I know are all board certified. Then there are just regular dermatologists and internal medicine people or general surgeons who aren’t board certified in plastics but who practice plastic surgery (even dentists). What Dr. Rey could’ve done was his first year in general surgery (all surgeons whether orthaepedic or otolaryngology or cardiac have to take general surgery the first year) then go into plastics his four remaining years or two years general then the rest in plastics. Dr. Rey is an exception, from what I see he generally does good work. But you can see why some people go into plastics vs regular surgery. A nose job which can take an hour or 1 hour and 1/2 will pay 7,000 cash, no insurance hassles etc. A nose reconstruction with cancer will take more hours, or any head and neck surgery and it can take 4 or 5 or 6 hours and you get paid 600.00 or 800.00. I’m not kidding you. So it takes a certain type of person to go into plastic surgery. So be careful. Make sure your plastic surgeron is board certified because he could just be ‘practicing’ on you. We see so much botched up jobs by people not trained. The lifestyle is not something enviable because you’re dealing with people and their insecurities, lots of body dismorphia. My husband doesn’t have the patience for plastic surgery. He usually tells them, what’s wrong with you? There’s nothing wrong with your nose, with your eyes, etc etc etc. God made you beautiful, now let me deal with real medical problems. Dr. Rey must have a lot of patience with them, hand holding etc.
