Uh, what does that have to do with Screech’s house, dammit? Oh what shall become of poor Screech??

We all have our SOB stories; I’ve been out of work for 2 years and do my best so that I can keep paying my mortgage and bills, rather than not f-ck the money away on other things I don’t need, like cable TV, going to the movies, restaurants, fast food, unnecessary trips in the car, new clothing, paying full price at regular grocery stores, etc. I hear so many people b-tch about money, then you look a little closer and see how much they waste and you’re like “man these people are stupid”.

I just want to move out of this sh-thole that is Illinois, and I’m not even trying to make a fast buck out of housing like everyone else – at this point I think I’d be happy to sell my house for what I paid for it and give up everything I paid in interest on the loan. It’s a real pile of sh-t if I can’t even do that…if I have to sell it for a lot less, and piss away my down payment, any interest I put into it, and then some on top of that for depreciation, then what’s the point?

If only I had known, I would have just rented and kept saving until the economy f-cked up and then moved where I want to and paid 1/2 of what the house is worth. Wow, really makes you confident in this sh-thole country doesn’t it. All you dumbf-cks seem to forget about how the government is f-cking you in the a-ss when you’re running your fool mouths about how great the USA is. Yeah, there are worse places to live, but THERE ARE ALSO BETTER ONES.

All these people are living way way above their means! They never belonged in these homes to start with. Their chickens have come home to roost! Everyone thinks they have a right to live like a movie star without the income. So they lie on the bank papers and feel entitled.
Lets vote out all these politicians who are doing all the bailing out of the industries. Like them fall hard and let others take over and build the system stronger.

Screech must be the most pathetic former child star in television history. He probably made millions of dollars as a child, yet he is apparently now broke. I also heard that he tries to pick up women at fast food joints, such as Arby’s and Taco Bell! He has no skills in life other than those he learned on the Saved By The Bell set. Too bad the bell won’t save Screech this time!!!

He should write another tell-all book where he exposes his gay relationship with the guy who played Mr. Belding. Lillian Bradley you are an idiot. Tony’s advice is correct for intelligent people who are savvy with their money. They are more likely to come out ahead in the long run.

However, for idiots like nancy or you (people who are not good with money and planning) it is probably best to stay away from any type of risk.

Yes, houses should not be looked at as a major money making investment unless you are extremely good at predicting real estate markets – otherwise having money to put into the stock market is a better investment on average over time (houses barely beat inflation on average while the stock market tends to go up 7 to 10% annually on average – this was well known by intelligent people BEFORE the bubble burst). Yes, go ahead and put down a good down payment, but you are smarter if you save some of that money in a liquid position for a rainy day or for investing rather than to buy the house with cash.

Tony, a tax deduction is not a tax rebate or a tax credit. You only get whatever percentage your tax bracket is, not the full deduction.

The only way to look at real estate as an investment tool is to KNOW you can hold it while it appreciates (and KNOW that it is going to do so), and/or carry a low rate mortgage and use the cash to earn a higher rate in the stock market.

I would NOT do this with my home because it isn’t an investment, it is a gamble. I like to lay my head in safety and security at night, not under a bridge.

Wah wah waaah… My family worked really hard to make the mortgage payments. They did whatever they could to meet their obligations. Fast forward a couple of decades later and we have whiners talking about “the bank taking their home away” after they put less than a tenth of the effort your parents did at being responsible.

The problem is not the govt. It’s the people voting it. Grow up and stop acting like babies. When homes were too much money for my budget guess what… I did without. Somebody made you believe it is a “right” to own a home even though homeownership was much lower decades ago than today. Back to renting and dreaming for the losers of life…

Hopefully he can work out his situation. I personally found a way of paying my mortgage down faster, and i save on interest. I take my house payment and divide in half. I sent two payments in per month instead of one whole payment. For example, if my house payment is $500.00 per month, I will send a payment of $250.00 in on the first, and then the remainder maybe on the 15th. Most mortgage companies have a service, and there is a small fee per month. You can do this your self, and save thousands on interest. Research it…………

I paid extra on my mortgage for years. I rented until I bought my first house in the early 90′s. I always paid extra to pay off my mortgage early. Sold and bought twice since then. Paid my mortgage in full 3 years ago. Sleep like a baby at night. Now all I have to worry about is higher property taxes because of the loser greedy public unions.

Lots of odd comparisons going on. Investment vs owning etc. But lets look at what seems pretty constant. Most of those saying the debt plan is good is claiming to place the 200k. in the bank, earn 5% and borrow the 200k for the house. If you are fortunate enough to have a sub 5% loan (lets say 4.5% since that is possible today), then the 0.5% you are making in interest does not pay the finance charges the bank is charging minus the gov assistance.

Let’s look at it this way. You put 200k in the bank at 8% (giving you some investment savy). After year 1, you have approx 216k. Starting year 2, you decide to buy a 200k house. You leave the money in the investments and get a 4% loan. Year 3, the financial market collapses a good bit due to bank bail outs (not so far in the past) and during this, you lose your job. Now your 233k (another year of interest) investment takes a 40% hit leaving you with 140k in the bank and a mortgage of just under 200k and no job. Your plan just went to hell.

If this sounds fictious, then you haven’t been watching the news over the past year or so.

Had you instead paid off the house, you would have a house that is paid for. No job and about 20k, plus 12000 more if you put what would have been your mortgage payement into your investment prior to job loss, remaining in assets. I bet in this scenario, a person could get some kind of job to keep food and utilities going until they get back on their feet; if not, then at least they have 20k or more to pay their bills – but the house is paid for.

At least you won’t be homeless.

I guess it really revolves around risk vs reward. If you are willing to risk your financial future, your familys home and pride to gain a few bucks, then perhaps the debt method is for you. On the other hand, if that risk is too high (as it is with some here), then I guess that is their choice.

In the end, it is definately a personal choice. My only angst about it is when I (as a tax payer) have to pay for someone elses bad decisions (Dustin, Nancy, etc). Because of people like them, my taxes are being spent on saving banks who also made bad decisions but are not required to pay for it.
