Amityville Horror House on Market for $1.15 Million
If you’re the squeamish type that believes spirits lurk in homes with a scary history, you should probably steer clear of this home. But, if you think a five-bedroom, three and one-half bath renovated Dutch Colonial with a boat house along a canal off the Long Island Sound sounds interesting, then this house could be for you. Known as the Amityville Horror house, it is listed for sale for $1,150,000.
You might recall the book, “The Amityville Horror: A True Story” (and subsequent movies) that chronicled the Lutz family’s paranormal experiences in the house after they purchased it for $80,000 in 1975. The price was considered a bargain, possibly because they purchased it 13 months after the gruesome DeFeo murders, which took place in the home. The Lutz family left the home after 28 days in which they described many supernatural events occurring such as slime oozing down walls, strange odors, moving furniture, and slamming doors, to name a few.
According to Newsday, the home went into foreclosure in 1977 and was purchased by James and Barbara Cromarty, owners of Riverhead Raceway. The Cromartys lived in it for 10 years, then sold it to 1987 to Peter and Jeanne O’Neill. The O’Neills then sold it 10 years later for $310,000 to the current owner, Brian Wilson.
As you can see from the photos above, the home has come a long way since the murders. The exterior was updated and painted and the notable “pumpkin-eye windows” were changed.
The original address of the home was 112 Ocean Drive, but the Cromarty’s changed it by a few digits to try to keep away the curious.
Coincidentally, another home with a history of murder is going up for auction. The Coleman home in Columbia, IL, is to be auctioned off today.
