First-Time Buyer Wants to Know: Buy a Condo or House?

A question came into Zillow Advice from laylow1198 who asks:

I am a first time home buyer and am trying to find out whether a condo or an actual house be better?

There were lots of great responses and as with many questions in real estate, the answer is, “it all depends.” It depends on your lifestyle, how long you plan on living there and the big one: do you like maintenance-free living?

I agree that it all depends on your life style. If you can be happy in both condo and a house, then I would go with a house. To me, having actual land is gold.

Couldn’t agree more. Only reason a condo would be more beneficial would be the common area maintenance is taken care of etc. Otherwise, i would much prefer a front and back yard!

A house will more commonly yield the best return on investment but don’t forgot to factor in the difference in additional expenses like maintaince and insurance and only buy what you can afford!
