Actress Who Played Comatose Wife in “Descendants” Lists Honolulu Home

Patricia Hastie, who played George Clooney's wife in "The Descendants," enjoyed the moment at the Golden Globe awards.
For her role as the comatose wife of George Clooney in the movie “The Descendants,” actress Patricia Hastie was charged with one supremely difficult task: Stay completely still yet look convincing as a once vibrant woman whose life may soon come to an end.
In real life, however, the 50-year-old former model and married mother of three college-age boys isn’t quite so retiring — something that’s reflected in the home Hastie is now seeking to sell in her adopted home state of Hawaii.
Hastie’s Honolulu real estate market home is listed for $2.198 million and from its private lot on a cul-de-sac, it boasts spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean from Na Pawli Haweo, or Hawaii Kai, a cliffside neighborhood on the east side of Oahu.
Hastie remodeled the home in 2008 with finishes that give it the look and feel of a Hawaiian island dream home: Pella windows and doors to maximize the views; Austrian cypress wood floors and Travertine tiles.
The 4-bedroom, 4-bath home includes a game room, wet bar, built-in office and home theater. The gourmet kitchen makes a gracious centerpiece to the home, complete with gas cooktop, custom cabinetry, granite and stainless steel appliances. Then there’s the outdoor area, centered with a salt-water pool with a waterfall.
As Hastie and her family looks to sell their home, the actress is soaking up increasing attention with the continuing success of “The Descendants,” which won Golden Globe awards for best drama and best actor.
In an article in USA Today, Hastie said working with Clooney was jarring, especially since she was required to not react to anything on set.
Says director Alexander Payne, who hired the Honolulu resident in Hawaii, where the movie is set: “We needed someone who could have been the halfway point between George Clooney and Shailene Woodley (who plays the couple’s older teen daughter). And this fine woman walked in. It wasn’t just the looks. I told her, ‘I need you to be very dedicated to this part. Will you lose weight?’ “
A 12-pound loss was just the start of her devotion.
“She would stay up all night and then come into work the next day,” Payne says. “After going through hair and makeup, she would get into bed. She said, ‘Don’t even tell me when you are shooting. Don’t make a clapper noise. Just let me lie here.’ ”
A single ear plug allowed her to distance herself from the activity around her while still being able to hear Payne’s directions. Melatonin made her too sleepy — no REMs (rapid-eye movements) allowed. So she switched to a calming beverage from a health-food store.
