Al Capone’s Chicago Home for Sale
By: Diane Tuman, Zillow Content Manager | April 17, 2009
Talk about a conversation piece. In January, we reported the Chicago home of Al Capone (aka “Scarface“), located at 7244 S Prairie Ave, Chicago, IL 60619, will likely go on the market this spring. Sure enough, the home is on the market for $450,000. Capone, perhaps the most famous gangster of all time, purchased the two-flat home in the Chicago working-class neighborhood of Grand Crossing in 1923 for $5,500.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the asking price of $450,000 is a bit exorbitant for this working-class South Side neighborhood, since similar two-flats are selling for $180,000 to $230,000. But the seller and real estate agent both feel its historic significance will bring the right buyer.
Patrice Brazil of Coldwell Banker has the listing.

That would be just TOO COOL to own Al’s old place. Alittle pricey but worth every penny. I wouldn’t mind having his old place down by Miami either.

It may be the ‘White Elephant’ for the neighborhood, but it is still an interesting to own piece of history.

Fill it full of 30’s gangster memorabilia and charge admission. That would be cool ! He’s buried over in Hillside by the “Strangler” with all his old buddies and enemies.

Obviously, It’s priced so only a drug dealer could afford it.

Someone in the same line of business than Al might go for it, hoping some of his skills will rub off on him. Or a buyer who plans to turn it into a Al museum, including a few Feds hanging around the perimeter. Looks like a solid brick construction.

It really would be a great idea to turn it into a Gangland
museum! Al was only one of many who called Chicago home.
John Dillinger was gunned down there. The St. Valentines
Day Massacre occured there. I am sure a museum would do
very well. Has anyone contacted the City of Chicago about
the proposal?

I think it would be wonderful to renovate that home! Can you imagine what MAY be hidden in those walls! Knock down the right one and you may get a little $$

I would think Heraldo would be knocking on your door every weekend.

Maybe some Hollywood’s “gangsters” will be interested to invest? “Once upon a time in America” or “The Godfather” museum?

This house should never be on the national register. I remember when the St Valentine’s Day massacre site was demolished. Some people howled in protest. I and most Chicagoans cheered. Place Walt Disney’s childhood home near Logan Square on the National Register. Dishonor violence, honor non-violence. If Al Capone’s home should receive such an honor, then the site of the Black Panther assassination should be honored also. Capone was a terrorist. My father and others who witnessed his violence would agree. He provided gifts and food to people as a way of making Chicagoans and Cicero residents overlook his destructive ways. As far as I’m concerned, the house can be demolished. The Black Panthers site has never been recognized with a plaque. When it was suggested several years ago, the opposition was nearly unanimous. Why is Scarface deserving of such respect? He was 100% scum!

Does anyone honestly think there would be any money left in the walls? People, take a moment and think about it.
Still, it would be a cool museum.

It would be pretty cool to own if you could turn it in to some sort of revenue stream, like a museum or something. Otherwise, it doesn’t make too much sense to buy.
