Barack Obama’s Chicago House

Barack Obama’s House

Soon after Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, the up-and-coming junior senator from Illinois, purchased his Georgian revival mansion on the South Side of Chicago, it set off alarms and suspicion of a shady deal. Why? In a real estate deal that is now called a “boneheaded move” by Obama, here is a timeline of what happened, leaning heavily on this thorough Q&A Obama did with the Chicago Sun-Times,

  • In June 2005, Obama and now-indicted political fundraiser Antoin “Tony” Rezko purchased adjoining parcels in the Kenwood neighborhood of Chicago. The parcels — one containing a house and the other undeveloped land — were owned by University of Chicago doctors Fredric Wondisford and Sally Radovick (husband and wife).
  • Obama paid $1.65 million for his home ($300K less than the asking price of $1.95 million, but it was the Obama’s third and “best offer“) while Rezko paid $625,000 for the adjacent, undeveloped lot.
  • Both closed on their properties on the same day.
  • Obama wanted to increase the size of his side yard and in January 2006, Obama paid Rezko $104,500 for a strip of his land - about one-sixth of the parcel and costs one-sixth of the Rezko’s original purchase price of $625,000. (Here is an excellent bird’s-eye view of the Obama and Rezko properties and how they were divided).
  • In 2006, Tony Rezko was indicted for fraud and was convicted in 2008.
  • In 2007, Tony’s wife, Rita, sold the remaining lot for $575,000.

So, how did the Obama’s originally learn about this home?

According to My DD: Direct Democracy, in 2004, Barack’s wife, Michelle, was on the board of the Commission of Chicago Landmarks and in this capacity, learned of a designated historical home in Kenwood that was for sale — the home and the adjacent land at 5046 South Greenwood.

…a Historical Georgian revival home built in 1910 with four fireplaces, glass-door bookcases fashioned from Honduran mahogany, and a 1,000-bottle wine cellar…

At the time, the Obamas were living in a Hyde Park condo and wanted to upgrade to a bigger space.  While the doctors wanted to sell the home and the lot together, the Obamas could not afford it. Barack then allegedly contacted Tony Rezko for advice on how to buy it since Rezko was also a real estate developer.

Another headache over this home for Obama is whether he received a discount on a home loan. And, Obama’s home has become a big headache for neighbors, too, with each day looking “… like there’s going to be a parade, but there isn’t one.”

We know Obama is as CROOKED as they come.

His dealings with Rezko are well known within the Chicago community, so tell us something we don’t know.

How about……what Rezko and Obama are hiding?

Note that Rezko was convicted on several counts of fraud and bribery in 2008.

Here’s a bit of contrarian insight into Senator Obama’s house purchase: he way overpaid for the “discounted” property! Meanwhile, the “full price” Rezko lot was a much better deal….

And for fun, here’s a tongue in cheek look at the dynamics of Barack Obama’s house purchase, using a trip to McDonald’s as a metaphorical point of reference in looking at the bids he made and the price he paid for it.

Where did Obama get the money to purchase this beautiful home? Has he finished paying off his college loans. How much of a mortgage dors he have. He has only worked as a senator for less than 3 years
Again I ask where did he get the money to buy the house.

  15. Tony Resko on October 30, 2008 12:32 pm

    Below market price for house.

Strip of land bought by Obama making the Rezko lot unbuildable because of zoning lot size requirements.

    No benefit to Rezko!

Big benefit to Obama as he now has use of the Rezko lot for 1/6 of the price.

Obama can later purchase the remaining Rezko substantially devalued lot at well below the price per square foot originally paid by Rezko.

Nope nothing wrong here….Move on please!

  16. Tony Resko on October 30, 2008 12:44 pm

    Correction to the above:

Obama can later purchase the remaining Rezko (now owned by Rezko firm lawyer) substantially devalued lot at below the price per square foot originally paid by Rezko and his former lawyer.

Question: Why did the lawyer pay quite a bit more for the portion of the lot owned by Rezko? Favor?

Nope, still nothing wrong here….Move on please!

And some think why question this?
Wake up Americia, where do you think his money is coming from?

I grew up in Hyde Park and I’m proud our new President lives there. As far as any wrong-doings, I’m sure if there were any punishable crimes they would have been found out and Obama spanked for them. The house is very modest for a man of his statue.
    GO OBAMA!

  22. Hillary on November 5, 2008 10:05 am

McCain [his wife] has the income to afford the house [they were purchased by his wife and her family. Barack's income does not support a million plus dollar home. I lived in Chicago for thr first 36 years of my life. Anyone with an ounce of common sense knows what went on here. Obama wrote a book in 1995 "Dreams of My Father" [he never even knew the guy, let alone his dreams]. Between 2002 when he announced he was running for the US Senate and January 2005 when he was sworn in he sold $7 million worth of books. Yet, I know of nobody who has read the book. You want to bribe an elected official without ever getting caught? Tell him to write a book, buy $7 million worth of his books and throw them in the trash can. Now, Barack said that the house deal was a “Boneheaded” move. I would expect that he would have said, “Hey, I did nothing wrong here!” As someone mentioned above … he is innocent until proven guilty!

Well I am not an african american. I am just a white middle aged wife and mother and I proudly voted for Mr. Obama. I live in Southern Illinois, in a very prejudice area Im sad to say. I put out an Obama sign in front of my house to show my pride, yea I took some heat, but my stance has been this….I have children who are just starting out on their own and one still at home and with the mess our country is in I want better for my childrens future. I believe Mr. Obama has that to offer us. I know this election was a huge step for the african american people, but it was also a huge step for the future of all of our young people. This election really brought out the American pride. As far as his home goes. Go in and type in Michelle Obamas name into google and read up on her, the woman has made some major money in her career. If they have worked hard to have something nice, dont be petty.

I wish some people would just except you for who u are. I am a young African-American male, who is thinking about the bright future ahead of me. I wish some people would just get off President-Elect Barack Obama….please…the man has already won the election, either you get with everybody else and throw your full support behind him or go somewhere and hide for God sake. From all the comments that I have read, these people are talking about his home and where did he get the money. First of all, it’s none of our business where he got the money to buy the one million dollar home. You don’t know if his wife helped him pay for it or not, nobody knows. Some people just can not see anyone else do good in life for nothing. It’s really sad, it really is. Because if that is all you people got to talk about, and you have nothing good to say about him, let me just say “God have mercy on your soul.” This man has come so far in life (being a black man), you do not know what he had to go through to get to where he is today, you don’t know how many doors have been shut in his face. Novemeber 4, 2008, was my first time voting for a presient, and yes, I voted for Senator Barack Obama all the way!!! So people please STOP, judging a book by its cover. If you don’t know him personally then why talk about him, it’s not like your hurting him, he probably don’t care what people say about him, your just making yourself look bad. Learn to think on the bright side of things. It’s time to get this country moving back in a positive direction, and that time is now….It’s Time For Change…Change We Can Believe In….And for all you “Prejudice” people (white, black, mexican, hispanic, native american, gray, orange, blue, hot pink, red, yellow, tan, purple, gay, straight or whatever. It doesn’t matter what ethnic background, what color, or what political party, racism must STOP. I’m only 18 years old but racism has just gotten way out hand. To me it’s worse now than it was in the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s. Being racist it just plain ignorant. That’s what apathetic people do, and to raise a child up to be racist is just showing no parenting skills what so ever. Excuse me for being so long but somebody has got to say something….History has been made and I am so excited to see what’s going to happen in the next for years, maybe eight!!!! On January 20, 2009, President-Elect Barack Obama will sworn in as the 44th and first African-American President of the United States of America. One Million Strong for Barack Obama!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok let me get this straight Mccain has 8 houses and Obama has 1 and you want to attack Obama. You people don’t know the truth you can only speculate. You wish you knew the truth. Obama wants to help this country to the best of his ability and all you speculators can do is complain. We should be joining together and praying for the best of our future. The characteristics of Obama are Geniune and he is a Strong Leader. We don’t have time to be negative with how the economy is going. For you that are prejudice Obama stands for all people. I come from parents of two different ethnic backgrounds like Obama and I know he can relate to all people.

To answer some questions: Obama paid off his educational loans in ten years, as most of us do. (That is the standard time period.) Most of his wealth comes from his book sales. Whether or not anyone actually reads them, both books have been bestsellers for quite a while. (At the University of Chicago Hospitals, Michelle Obama got a promotion and substantial raise to over $300,000 in 2005, but she was working part-time from 2007 on, and her income dropped to about $100,000; she took a full, unpaid leave of absence starting early this year. Obama’s Senate salary was about $170,000.) His house, while large, is not a mansion. I had occasion to walk past it more than once before the security barricades went up, and while I don’t know what’s been done to the interior, it looked to me like a maintenance nightmare.

  37. jennifer on November 23, 2008 8:12 pm

everyone talks about how we are more modern about race and that color doesn’t matter. if that is the case, why is the only thing that anyone has to say about barack is what color his skin is? i feel bad that this man was voted into office because of his color not his qualifications.
in regards to his house, i think people are questioning how this was paid for because his family’s combined income is not enough to pay for this house. this is why we have a housing crisis right now. many people were given loans for homes that they could not afford. The monthly payment on this home is about 7 thousand so 80 something thousand a year just for his mortgage not including home insurance and taxes regarding historical homes. This means his whole salary goes to his home. where does the remainder for school, food etc. come from?
also, he said he is about change but his whole cabinet is from clinton’s time. how is this change? barack sold us a dream and that is exactly what we got a dream!!
last thing, why do i hear black people say “finally someone i can look up to”
Seriously, do you think that i ever looked up to a white politician or to hillary b/c she is a white woman. in my eyes, barack is the same as the white politicians. he was key note speaker and some old democrats heard him speak and they knew they had a winner. he has gotten america to vote for him due to his fantastic oratory skills. unfortunately, he owes these old democrats some favors. once a politician always a politician.

I listen to cnn and one particular news comentator is very hateful and twisted. He has not been sworn into his new position and we are getting complaints like he is responsible for this financial crises in America. If we as americans would get behind our present-elect instead of looking for drama, we would be further along. This new year, in the area of financial crises, is something that we should all be looking at. Too many people haave lost jobs, and homes as well as stock market revenue. If this country is to recover, it will take all of us working together and certainly praying to God to pull it off. Lets concentrate on the ecomony.

Hon. Obama’s Landslide victory proves that he won over the heart of American, who re-endorses their greatness by voting above the cast, creed, color and politics. His Victory has elevted the trembling image in the world.
. This is the first time when world is optimistically soliciting the factual ‘World Peace’ under sincere leadership of Mr. Obama, as his economic policy and voting politics is free from any influence.
I am excited to hear the wonderful weekly address of Hon’ble Barak Obama, comprise of his inner desire, and dream to re-build country’s economy, create new jobs and to improve total structure of country, which was ignored by last regime. This devastating situation is a natural consequence of the imprudent decision of investing Hundreds of Billion Dollars in uncalled-for wars, loosing World confidence, as such heavy redction of imports.

Where as, no one, either in US or in the world has any doubt about sincerity, integrity and commitment of Mr. Obama, who created new chapter in the history, but the challenges ahead are unprecedented. I am strongly of the opinion that, TO ACCOMPLISH THIS TARGET, MR. OBAMA HAS TO REGAIN LOST CONFIDENCE OF THE WORLd.
It may require decades, to repair damaged relations between US and rest of the world (as stated by Mr. John Kerry, Presidential candidate in his election campaign), but for Barak Obama, it require only one term, as whole world is considering him as their family member. BUT ALL DEPEND UPON HIS POLICIES ANNOUNCEMENT ON THE DAY 1.

As far as Obama buying the white house, I hope you like the condition that the countey is presently in and the current war ans loss of life. Mr. obama certainly can do no worse than the current president. I hope the american publis will permit him an opportunity to do his job. In closing, I watched and heard some major lying on the campaign trail in the mc can camp. Ie lied so much, he forgot to tell us what his plans were. He also allowed his people to select the wrong running partner and she further hindered his efforts in gaining the whitehouse. Paul, good luck next time and remember to get some help for yourself. And just because a politician say hes clean doesnt make it real! The whole purpose of democracy is to give us a choice… but in the current U.S. all we’re given is the lesser of two evils. Real people cant afford to run for office, which means the real people get no representation in gov. I’m not republican or democrat for 1 rason, they both work for the same people… and it aint us!

Who looks twice at two laywers buying a $1.65 million home? Not me, that’s probably on the lower end for lawyers. Seriously, to anyone skeptical, would you really prefer a president that was only able to afford a 2 bedroom apartment? No, if someone is going to be leading the country out of economic straits, it’s probably a good sign that their own life has been succesful.

  54. Blue Mark on February 1, 2009 1:22 pm

The notion that the sale of the 10 foot strip of the Garden lot next door to the Obama property made the garden lot “unbuildable” and thus worthless is nonsense. First - Rita Rezko sold that lot at a considerable profit. Second - the new owner put it on the market for 3 times his buying price - clearly he doesn’t believe it is worthless. Third - the lot is not “unbuildable”, despite what Sean Hannity has claimed on his Fox show. The buildable area of the garden lot, even after the transfer of the 10 foot strip to the Obama lot, is more than sufficient to build the Obama house or nearly every other house in the neighborhood - a footprint of well over 4000 square feet. Are you kidding me? You have no one to blame except for yourselves for electing this elitist piece of communist trash as president. His presidence so far has been nothing but a mockery and maybe he should give Michelle a go at running the country. I thought we had to have been born in America in order to run for president? I guess not. People, business create jobs not governement. Half of you uneducated molignons have no clue as to the definition of democracy or socialism, you just see this black man in office and now you think you understand what it takes to run the country? Ignorance hence the name the majority of you earned that you all call one another, but if a white person says it its considered racism. Unbelievable with you blind people. I respect the black man who can WORK and bring home an honest buck to provide for his family, but the rest of “yall” hip-hoppers and drug slanging parasites should be dropped off on an island and swim home for all I care, we all know how much “yall” love the water. Ask yourselves this the next time you all want to poke politics, do I have an education? Do I know piolitics? Do I know how to spell politics? and finally, What have I done for this country? Most likely you will find your answer somewhere within those few questions. Furthermore, back to the elitisst you elected, I find it real classic that now the Democratic republic are questionning the motives of this president. Go figure. Looks like we will be stuck in this recession for quite awhile, but while you sit back and struggle, we the hard working American public will sit back at our desks collecting the big bucks and coast through this economy that the president continues to destroy. Its called job security.

It’s been 7 1/2 months since this post was written. I have not yet heard any news facts pointing in the direction of any wrongdoings by Obama. Just a thought..

    Dear President Obama
I’m from Guinea-Bissau (West Africa) and i’ve been in America for some time. I just wanted to let you know that we support your policies and the world believes that you are the right man at the right time. Please don’t answer to those who are trying to detract your actions, we know you will succeed. May God bless you dear President.

Why does politics always have to come up the man bought a house and a stunning one at that. Leave the man alone and let him get one with what he needs to, instead of criticizing and condemning him, you lucky to have a man like this in office.

  64. Cedar Rapids Real Estate on June 11, 2009 8:47 am

I didn’t vote for the man and I am not impressed with the increased spending but that being said. He has managed to bring people together in a much greater way than our previous president.

The verdict is still out but I am concerned about the increased spending and potential hyper inflation. Nice house though…

Oo..Obama’s house! Diane…if this happened after Obama took the presidential seat, he would pay more perhaps. For his moves to reinvigorate the dropping market of real estate, this would be his choice to show that ‘Yes, We can’.

Looks like a decent home to me, I’ll have it if its up for grabs ;-)

  71. Sick of Diry Obama on August 21, 2009 9:34 pm

His partner in this real estate deal, who was also his chief fund-raiser, Tony Resko, is now a convicted felon and is in jail. Resko was the former govenor’s ‘bag man’, and Blago is now the disgraced former govenor. obama stumped for Blago’s elections twice.

His chief of staff earned big bucks working for fannie mae, one of the govt. backed mortgage companies that has almost bankrupted the country by giving mortgages to people who were not able to pay for the mortgages. Rahm then earned $16M in two years working foran investment bank, even though he had no banking experience.

Obama is now and has also been surrounded by crooks.

Doeas anyone know who bought it?

    It is sold?

  78. Diane Tuman on October 7, 2009 9:28 am

Everyone: Obama’s house is not for sale (as of this writing 10/7/09) and the point of the article was to highlight all the homes of the presidential/VP contenders last fall during the race for the White House. Also, Obama’s house was of interest due to his real estate ties with convicted businessman Tony Rezko.

However, the home right next to the Obama’s is for sale: http://www.zillow.com/blog/obamas-next-door-neighbors-home-for-sale/2009/09/11/

Everyone is looking for an edge in real estate. Looks like a great piece of property though.

  80. 100%mortgage on October 26, 2009 3:25 pm

Yes I have to agree with Chicago on that one. Everyone is trying to get an edge on a property but you cannot blame them.

  81. buy to letmortgages on October 26, 2009 3:27 pm

Does Obama have a mortgage on it then? funny, I never considered something like that before..

  82. Burke on November 8, 2009 5:55 pm

Well, he has been in office long enough to see the person he is,”a liar”,only got elected because he is black and without a doubt not qualified to be a president,a socialist, not a U.S Citizen (how did we let this happen), may God find an impeachment reason within his term.
