There are an abundance of haunted celebrity homes in the greater Los Angeles area, so it is only fitting that Los Angeles ranked 14th on the 2010 Zillow Trick-or-Treat Housing Index. If you’re an LA local looking for some Hollywood-caliber spook houses be sure to visit these five  ‘hoods on Halloween night.

Top 5 Los Angeles Neighborhoods to Trick-or-Treat in 2010

  1. Beverly Hills
  2. Venice
  3. Hancock Park ( Mid City West )
  4. Studio City
  5. Westchester

Methodology

There is a common belief that wealthy neighborhoods are the Holy Grail for harvesting the most Halloween candy. However, to provide a more holistic approach to trick-or-treating, the Zillow Trick-or-Treat Housing Index was calculated using four equally weighted data variables: Zillow Home Value Index (ZHVI), population density, Walk Score and local crime data from Relocation Essentials. Based on those variables, the Index represents neighborhoods that will provide the most candy, with the least walking and safety risks.

About Los Angeles’s  Best Trick-or-Treat Neighborhoods

Beverly Hills catapulted itself to the top of Zillow’s list this year (in 2009 the oh-so-famous ‘hood ranked #5). The celebrity real estate market aside, this is truly a great place to visit on Halloween night if you like $$$ homes (the current Zillow Home Value Index is $1.9 million) and low crime. In fact, the ‘hood ranked in the top 25 percent in each Index category.

Venice, a sometimes wild ‘n crazy hangout for the artistic and creative, appears to have a softer side come Halloween. “The Ghouls,” a local elementary school rock band is playing a gig at the local Mar Vista Farmers Market Halloween Festival and the rec center is throwing a carnival. If you’re craving a big kid Venice-style party, the local DJ’s are also hosting a Halloween shindig with “organic food” and the boardwalk will most certainly be center stage to some circus-like Halloween drama. FYI, in 2009, Venice ranked first on Zillow’s Index.

Hancock Park is one of the oldest and most well-preserved neighborhoods in Los Angeles known for its pristine lawns, beautiful tree-lined streets and central location just five miles west of downtown. The neighborhood surrounds the Wilshire Country Club and 86 percent of its homes and structures were identified as being Historic Contributors in the Historic Resources Survey, one of the most intact historic neighborhoods in the nation.

Low crime rates and a dense concentration of homes makes Studio City a solid option for Halloween night. Local home values are up year-over-year to a current Zillow Home Value Index of $735,700, so one could theorize that happy homeowners will be extra generous when doling out candy.

Rounding out the top 5 list is the neighborhood of Westchester. Home to  Loyola Marymount University, you’re sure to see undergrads parading the streets in suggestive festive holiday attire. For the families in the area, the local YMCA organized an arts and crafts, carving contests, and Halloween line dancing!

Although the above neighborhoods statistically rank as the top 5 spots in LA, you really haven’t lived until you’ve been out on Santa Monica Blvd during the City of West Hollywood’s Annual Halloween Carnival.  It’s wild and crazy and the costumes never disappoint!  However, you may want to grab a babysitter for later in the evening and leave the kids at home for this one.
