Bob Costas has a little bit too much humility to call himself the hardest working man in the sports business, but the fact is, after decades of TV anchor duties on everything from Major League Baseball to the Olympics, Costas has accumulated a resume that stretches like a “What’s What” in recent sports history.

In other words, the native New Yorker who called St. Louis home for decades really does deserve the lovely California house he and wife Jill recently purchased in Newport Beach.

The 4,500-square-foot residence in the gated community of Crystal Cove has 4 bedrooms, 5.5 bathrooms and is situated on a corner lot up a hill from the Pacific Ocean. In addition to the main house, there is a guesthouse, a saltwater pool and generous patio space to make this West Coast abode a perfect fit for a man who has spent decades in planes, press booths and brightly lit TV studios.

Costas continues his reign as one of the news industry’s top anchors and has been more than willing to use the TV booth to speak out on tough issues that arise at the intersection of sports and society. He scored the only exclusive interview with former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, who was eventually convicted on child sexual abuse charges that shook the university’s powerful football program off its moorings.

Most recently the self-professed liberal-minded Costas told CNN that he would have thought twice about interviewing the Notre Dame football player at the center of an Internet hoax about a dying girlfriend. More notably, Costas fanned the national debate about gun control late in 2012 after Kansas City Chiefs player Jovan Belcher committed murder-suicide.

Costas and his wife paid $4.7 million for their new West Coast confines, and that included the California-cool furniture. The home was built in 2006 and had been listed for sale in 2009 for $5.57 million before a price drop in May 2012.
