Last night, the King Family of Charlotte, NC, made their television debut as a result of the generosity of ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, which is a program that hand picks a family in need and replaces their old home with a new one. The demo and construction of the home took place over the summer, but last night the American TV-viewing public got to see the final result. As usual, the creation of this new home became a source of irritation to some neighbors.
Criticism surrounds many of the Extreme Makeover homes as being too large for the neighborhood, or they become difficult to maintain or pay taxes on, with some going on the market and some even ending up in foreclosure. The King Family home was a modest, one-story ranch home in the Windsor Park neighborhood of Charlotte and it had a Zestimate of $127,000. But, it had a serious mold problem and was too small to accommodate the Kings’ daycare business. Voila! As you can see from the photos above, a new, two-story home was built by Extreme Makeover, which easily overpowers the neighborhood’s squat, one-story brick houses from the 60’s.
Neighbor Ray Montgomery says:
“They say they don’t build McMansions,” said Montgomery, who moved into his house in 1981. “That’s a McMansion in this neighborhood right now.”
