Geithner Can’t Sell, Decides to Rent

By: Whitney Tyner, Zillow PR Specialist | June 3, 2009

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner claims to see signs of economic improvement for the nation, but the same does not appear to be true for his personal pocket book. The Obama official has been feeling the reality of the housing crisis since listing his 32 Maple Hill Dr, Larchmont, NY home for sale back in February for $1,635 million — approximately $33,000 more than what he bought it for in 2004. Despite a price reduction to $1.575 million, the home sat untouched for months.

Today, the Associated Press announced that the house has been taken off the market and is being rented to an unidentified family for $7,500 a month.  My hypothesis: Geithner is sure to be one landlord who expects rent to be paid on time!

It’s a lovely home, but most people are terrified to commit to expensive homes.

Modest homes will move quickly. But if people are prudent and target homes that are 3 to 4 times their average income, then this particular home is generally attractive to those with $500,000 income.

Sadly, very few Americans are confident about holding on to their jobs in the next few years.

In 2007, the median American family income was $50,233.00. I wonder how many people can afford a house at the current level of housing price.

Two houses on my street went from $800,000 initial offering price to $550,000 final price (after over a year) and from $1.25 Million initial offering price to $950,000 final price (after about three months). I am also talking East Coast Mid-Atlantic Region.

Timmy dropped his price by $60,000 after being on the market for four months. This guy is a real rocket scientist. It’s no wonder his PPIP plan went nowhere.

Beatiful Home. The only item that needs modified is the entrance. It is not at all inviting. The look of standing in the rain while waiting at the front door never looks good. Pull that door inside a hallow, get a pair of matching lights, get a new door w/mail slot, i.e. get rid of that mail-box, add a window or an emblem over the doorway. somehow, add a little more invitation.

I’ll be paying rent in TARP money.

Didn’t know the mortgage company holding the loan would allow the house to be rented. They generally don’t. And Timmy, this time don’t forget to pay the TAXES on the rental income.

We should have just let Timmy print a half million dollars & stuff it in his pockets instead of having him spend trillions to keep the housing market propped up so Little Timmy doesn’t lose any money on a moronic real estate investment. I can see why he couldn’t understand how to use Turbo tax the guy is so dumb I wish he’d come by my house on poker night.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a less attractive house. It seems to be furnished in the “thrift-shop reject” style. I wouldn’t give him $50,000 for it. Did his broker never hear of staging? LOL, Tim.

  12. Joy on June 8, 2009 10:47 am

It does look like its been staged! There are no personal pix or anything in it. I suggest they get a better stager. And I agree, the furniture is awful. That bright blue bathroom is enough to make you puke. We’ve got craftsmen and early 50’s going on in an English Tudor. The house has NO character.
The landscaping is terrible. This house could be made to look so adorable. Pay me and I’ll do it for ya! Joy
