Watch Michelle build her design business in a new setting and completely redesign her southern farmhouse, all while adjusting to the slower-paced life with her once city-dwelling family. New episodes of “Glamour Goes South” will air exclusively on Zillow Blog the first Thursday of every month.
My name is Michelle Workman, and I’m an interior designer to the stars. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, where I’ve been running my own design firm for over 15 years. Throughout my career I’ve had the pleasure of working for some of Hollywood’s top A-list celebrities, Silicon Valley executives and Manhattan philanthropists, all from my home base in Los Angeles.
While I loved my life in Los Angeles, about 3 years ago my husband and I decided to ditch the L.A. glitter and glam and head down South for a simpler life where our two young boys could grow up in an idyllic environment (I was hoping for something straight out of “Tom Sawyer”). After much research, we decided on beautiful Chattanooga, TN. Our friends, my clients and just about everyone else thought we were crazy to move out of L.A. — I mean, why would a successful designer give up that clientele and lifestyle?
Truth be told I didn’t feel that I was giving up anything. With my experience I was sure I could find clients in Atlanta, Nashville and, of course, Chattanooga! My husband can work from anywhere, our children could play with the neighbors’ kids rather than me having to drive them an hour away (or in other words, 8-10 miles) and we could get a much larger house, with even a little land. Sounds like a life of pure bliss to me!
After buying our beautiful farmhouse sight unseen (found through a listing on Zillow), we packed up and headed down South to start our new life.
This season, watch our family’s journey as we remodel our home, battle over budgets and start my design business in a brand new location, all while making lasting memories with family and friends. Plus get design tips and other expert insights in my Zillow Blog column.
