Google’s Garage

By: Drew Meyers, Zillow Business Development Specialist | October 2, 2006

Garages have always served as incubators for the next great talent or idea. Rock bands were first, then technology and dotcom startups followed. And then there’s the uber startup — Google.

Yesterday, it was announced that Google bought the home where THE garage exists. Back in 1998 and fresh after raising $1 million, Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page actually rented the garage from future employee Susan Wojcicki (now Google’s vice president of product management) for $1,700 per month. It was their "office" for five months. It’s where Google was born.

The home — with THE garage — is located in Menlo Park, CA with a Zestimate of $1,170,722. What price can be put on the garage, except to say a helluva idea came out of that garage.

Just think: Eight years ago, these two guys built something in a garage that now employs 7,900 employees, with most working in these headquarters in Mountain View, CA.

Note to self: When I do own a house, never rip down the garage…
