Owners of the Civil War-era manse at 320 Jefferson St, Natchitoches, LA 71457 have dropped the list price to $995,000, down from the $1.175 million price set in May when the “Steel Magnolias” house first hit the Natchitoches real estate market.
The 6-bedroom, 7-bathroom home was built by Italian architects, marrying the ornate old-world style with deep Southern charm. All of that made the 6,000-square-foot house the perfect stage to host Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton and Daryl Hannah for the 1989 hit movie.
According to the inn’s owners, the home was purchased in 2007 for $825,500, with another $75,000 paid for the furniture. When the property was then made over into the Steel Magnolia House Bed & Breakfast it did not rely simply on name recognition to attract guests. According to Trip Advisor, the hospitality, food and accommodations were worthy of an Academy Award, too.
And with the Lifetime cable network planning a reboot of “Steel Magnolias” starring an all African-American cast — including Queen Latifah, Phylicia Rashad, Jill Scott and Alfre Woodard — the original setting is sure to attract renewed interest.
