In the market for a castle near the ocean? We found one in Narragansett, RI (where we hear they have pretty good beer).
It is the “Hazard Castle,” located at 333 Ocean Rd, Narragansett, RI, 02882 and it is listed for $7 million. Complete with gables, turrets and even a 105-foot tower, the Hazard Castle is on the Rhode Island Sound, just across Ocean Road on 38 acres.
How did a castle come to exist in Narragansett, RI? According to the Rhode Island Historical Society Manuscripts Division, businessman “Joseph Peace Hazard (1807-1892) built a medieval-style structure known as the “Castle” on his Seaside Farm in Narragansett Pier,” supposedly because Hazard saw this area to have potential as a popular resort. The Hazard family was among the early settlers of Rhode Island
Here are some of the highlights:
- 1,400 feet of frontage on Ocean Road
- Main house over 10,000 sq ft
- 26,000 sq ft in 3 large outbuildings (barn, brick garage, and shingled residence with 2 guest apartments)
- Adjacent to The Castle is a 21,000 square foot retreat center with a full cafeteria, meeting space, and chapel
- Specimen trees in grid formation, stone walls, meadow and 105-foot tower
According to Castles of the United States, the Hazard Castle was built because:
“… he (Joseph Peace Hazard) was a spiritualist and a Druid came to him in a dream and told him to build a Gothic Style castle!”
The castle was purchased by the Catholic Diocese from the Hazard family in 1951, and the property has most recently been home to the Our Lady of Peace Spiritual Center.”

This is crazy I never realized that any Castles existed in the United States. Looks like I will be wasting lots of time tonight searching on the web for other Castles. This kind of cool.
