Even a home with the cachet of being the movie home of the popular holiday family flick “Home Alone” can’t seem to catch a break. The Home Alone House, which first hit the market in May for $2.4 million, just received a price cut of $225,000. The decrease brings the house price down below $2 million — to $1,950,000 on the very pricey Winnetka real estate market. Located twenty miles outside Chicago, median Winnetka home values are presently $809,500.

Situated on a quiet residential street, the home looks nearly identical to the movie with its red-brick exterior and stately white columns.

In the movie, Macaulay Culkin’s character, Kevin McCallister, is accidentally left behind in the house as his family boards a plane and leaves on a vacation to France. McCallister is then left to ward off a pair of bumbling thieves, played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern, who are trying to burglarize the house.

So, what is the reason for the price drop? Maybe damage created by McCallister’s traps, blow torches, flying paint cans and loose tarantulas to ward off the burglars? Nah — only some of the real home’s interior was used for the movie; most of it was shot on a set re-created in a facility nearby.

More likely, the homeowners John and Cynthia Abendshien, are looking to sell their home quickly. According to Reuters, the couple is looking to downsize from the 5-bedroom, 3.5-bath home.

The Georgian-style home has over 4,000 square feet of living space on a half-acre lot. Charming details like high ceilings, dormered windows, and wood-burning fireplaces lend to its 1921 construction date.

The home is listed by Marissa Hopkins of Coldwell Banker.

Based on a 30-year fixed mortgage rate at a current rate of 3.924 percent and assuming a 20 percent down payment, the monthly mortgage payment for this home is $8,893 per month, as quoted on Zillow Mortgage Marketplace.
