Since 1984, the MTV Video Music Awards have reigned as the biggest party in the music industry, mixing edgy performances, off-the-cuff acceptance speeches and the wacky world of celebrity fashion. Over the years, Madonna made us blush, Fiona told us what she really thinks of “this world,” Britney danced with a snake, Kanye launched into the interruption heard ’round the world’ and Gaga introduced the meat dress.
The 2012 VMAs (Video Music Awards) air at 8 p.m. EDT Thursday on MTV, and in preparation for the big night, we’re taking a look at a few places where the Moonman trophies might land once the party’s over.
Nominations: Video of the Year, Best Male Video, Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography for “Take Care” featuring Rihanna; Best Hip-Hop Video for “HYFR” featuring Lil Wayne
Crib details: The Canadian-born hip-hop sensation, full name Aubrey Drake Graham, is tied for the most VMA nods with none other than Rihanna, who earlier this year allegedly sparked a nightclub brawl between her co-nominee and her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown.
Drake has been quite busy on the real estate front over the past year. In January he listed two Miami Beach condos overlooking Biscayne Bay for $2.5 million. The side-by-side units boast 20-foot-high ceilings with waterfront views, glass walls and marble staircases, and can be combined as a single apartment to create 5,475 square feet of living space.
In July he purchased a 7,400-square-foot Hidden Hills, CA estate that’s perfect for entertaining. The 7-bedroom, 9-bathroom private compound features a multi-million dollar pool with waterfalls, a slide and grotto as well as a tennis court and five-stall horse facility with riding area. Inside, there’s a 24-seat theater and wine cellar.
Nomination: Best Female Video for “Love You Like a Love Song”
The 5-bedroom, 5-bathroom home was built in 1956 and features mahogany hardwood floors, intricate crown moldings and plantation shutters. Outside there’s a pool and spa, endless patios and tennis and bocce ball court. See photos of Selena Gomez’s home.
Nominations: Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Editing for “Mercy” featuring Pusha T, Big Sean and 2 Chainz
Crib details: West made quite a splash at the 2009 VMAs when he interrupted Taylor Swift’s Best Female Video acceptance speech to proclaim that Beyoncé “had one of the best music videos of all time.” Lately he’s been in the headlines and on reality TV as Kim Kardashian’s new leading man.
West picked up his Los Angeles home in 2003 for $1.75 million. The 3-bedroom, 3.5-bath Hollywood Hills mansion sits on a winding drive with views of the city below and is described as a “modern masterpiece.” See photos of Kanye’s home.
Nominations: Best Video With a Message for “How to Love” and Best Hip-Hop Video with Drake for “HYFR”
Crib details: Weezy, born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., splits his time between Miami and his native New Orleans, where the rapper landed in the headlines earlier this year when he was cited for high grass at his Kenner, LA home.
That home is on the market for $1.7 million and features amenities worthy of any celebrity. Lil Wayne’s mansion has 5 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms and spans more than 10,000 square feet, boasting high-end finishes such as stainless steel, granite and marble. The back of the home features a wall of glass overlooking Lake Pontchartrain.
Nomination: Best Video With a Message for “Dark Side”
Crib details: For years the original “American Idol” echoed the sentiments of broken-hearted women everywhere with hits such as “Since U Been Gone” and “Mr. Know It All,” but now she’s fallen head over heels for talent manager Brandon Blackstock, which may explain her recent real estate moves.
Built in 1993, Clarkson’s home features a man-made pond in the backyard, lap and diving pools, treehouse, dog runs and walking trails.
Inside, the 4-bedroom, 6-bath home has 6,880 square feet of living space, including dual master suites, theater room and gym.
