9716 58th Pl W, Mukilteo WA
For sale: $1.89 million

Sometimes the best things start as scribbles on a napkin. Just as J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” books began as notes on scrap paper, this unique glass home began as a cocktail napkin sketch.

“The original owner was from Belfast, (Northern) Ireland, and he wanted something where the outside was the inside,” said listing agent Carrie DeBuys of Realogics Sotheby’s International Realty. “He and his wife dreamed up this idea and then found an architect who drew up the plans.”

Bringing in the outside is desirable in a lot of places, but in the Northwest, where the gorgeous landscape is often tempered by gray days, it makes a lot of sense. Sitting bluffside to Puget Sound, this home not only captures the water views, but as much daylight as possible.

“It’s light and bright,” said DeBuys, “even on a rainy day.”

Located in Mukilteo, just 20 minutes north of Seattle, the home occupies a three-quarter-acre lot just minutes to the freeway.

“The home makes you feel like you’re on the islands when you’re there,” DeBuys said. And if you ever wanted to get to the San Juan Islands, the local ferry is just minutes away.

A 160-foot skylight runs along the exterior of the house. Additional large windows and portholes, manufactured in the same shipyard as the Titanic, provide extra light as well as charm. The interior walls are an expensive brick, a nod to the owners’ roots and a style often seen in Europe.

The home is all one level — which provides the setting for one heck of a party, says DeBuys — defined by a massive living room and round fireplace.

It’s the fireplace that provided the center of the home. DeBuys says the owners explained that the fireplace felt like camping as they would gather around it and talk about their day.

“It’s a very comforting feel,” she said.

Measuring 5,445 square feet, the home has 5 bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms.

According to Zillow’s mortgage calculator, a monthly payment on the home would be $6,692, assuming a 20 percent down payment on a 30-year mortgage.
