Many complain that McMansions are unreasonably large for a single-family home, but McMansions have nothing on what is reportedly the largest home in the U.S.

Located in Sagaponack, NY, this massive waterfront compound was built on 63 acres. Construction began in 1998 and was completed in 2003, but not without an outcry from the local community, many of whom believed it would be used as a hotel, business retreat or religious center.

Not so. Instead it was built for self-made billionaire Ira Rennert and his family. Rennert, who has large holdings in the industrial sector, commissioned the home to be built for his personal use.

Located at 281 Daniels Ln Sagaponack, NY 11963, the actual square footage and number of bedrooms and bathrooms vary, depending on source. Living space ranges anywhere from 43,031 to 100,000 sq ft; bedrooms vary from 21 to 29 bedrooms and bathrooms are equally difficult to pin down, ranging from 18 to 49. At Zillow, we get our data from public records and our facts show 21 bedrooms, 18 bathrooms and 43,031 sq ft. Discrepancies in data can also be attributed to whether other buildings on the estate are included in the numbers.

One thing is certain: this is one, big house. The aerial image below shows a portion of what’s on the property, but in addition to the main home is an indoor theater, two bowling alleys, two tennis courts, two squash courts, game rooms, and a basketball court.

Wow I couldn’t imagine living in a place that large. It just seems such a waste of space. I just think of all the other things that I could spend my money on. I guess if you got that money though the sky is the limit!

Have to agree with a few in the beginning – it’s the man’s money and he can do what he wants with it. Besides vanity and self-indulgence, the bane of our existence is the incessant need to pass judgment on each other.

WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. While people are dying in other countries because his companies are polluting their land, he is enjoying such a big monster mega house. This is a sin. MORE PEOPLE MUST SAY SOMETHING. SPEAK OUT because people like him are destroying our planet, he is killing the fertile lands in Peru with his mining company DOE RUN. Question? When all the fertile lands are destroyed by his mining companies, What are we going to eat? Are we going to eat gold?

I’m going to repost my old post. I still feel the same!

This house is wrong on so many levels… And for all of you that defend this remember what history has taught us Imperialism doesn’t survive. No one on Earth needs this much space for anything. And the fact that he did this shows he doesn’t care about anything or anyone but himself, if that. This is exactly why mother nature is killing us. I’m not a Communist, I’m a realist and this is unreal. I can’t believe people defend this. 200 million is enough money to feed an entire nation like Haiti. I’m sure he’s never donated even close to that, add that he’s actually poisoning people all over the world and you have a no brainer. This is an atrocity to humanity, the same kind of atrocity that made the Egyptian empire fall, the Roman Empire fall, Napoleon fall, Most of the European Monarchy fall and eventually (sooner than later, even though I realy hope I’m wrong for the sake of my kid) America fall. You can’t have a disparity so huge in society and not expect and uproar at some point. I’m sure the souls of those that have died from this mans lead poisoning fit in that house, in fact they probably fit comfortably. I wonder if he can even sleep a night, he probably does, comfortably. That’s the problem.

You can do whatever you want with your money and I believe that to be true. But is what you do with your money that truly defines you. I love capitalism, but it should be responsible capitalism.NO ONE ON EARTH NEEDS A HOUSE THIS BIG AND THAT COULD VERY WELL BE FACT, AND THERE ARE A LOT BETTER THINGS WE CAN DO ON EARTH WITH 200 MIL THAT IS ALSO FACT. Don’t cling on the idea of being american or capitalist to defend something as untasteful, wrongly conceived and executed as this.

    Disgusting…

By the way, I’m wealthy, unlike many of the people commenting here and I don’t envy this guy one bit. By the looks of his house he’s trying to fill a big sad hole in he’s heart and probably compensating for the lack of something in he’s pants. (AND HURTING ALL OF US ON EARTH WHILE DOING SO)

  • Seraphim

Ira has the money to do as he wishes with it, doesn’t matter how he earned it and it doesn’t matter how he spends it. It’s none of our business period. Would you like to have someone come into your life and tell you how to spend your money?? Somehow I don’t think that would fly even for those of you that “do good works”. The choice to do those works are YOURS…the choice not to is also Yours.

YOU chose the home you live in, You chose the clothing you wear and YOU chose to eat dinner knowing that hungry children are starving even while you eat that cheese burger…shame on you…right??

NO…see here’s the rub. You can dispise a man for not running around putting his wealth toward saving the world, but unless you have plan on giving your own income away Your opinion is just an opinion.

Ira wanted a home…he could afford a home, any he chose and that is his right…I can’t argue his land usage or resource responsibility while I sit on a computer using electricity in an air conditioned home “of my choosing” and eat my lunch while children around the world are starving…

  • http://accessavhomes.com/ Palmdale Homes

I love that property. It’s about 25 times what many houses in my area are, but if he wants it and he can afford it, then that’s great. There’s no reason why anyone should complain about what he decides to build on his land if it isn’t hurting anybody in any way. Tennis courts, bowling alleys and an outdoor theater. I would be in heaven.

Ira has a right to choose any property he feels is a fit for him and his family. One shouldn’t begrudge another because they worked for what they have.

  • haydos

that is awesome!!! this is an awesome house!
it has its own power plant!
in the end, the land would have only been used for another 3 houses anyway, so whats the big deal. . .
good on him i say! maybe it’s worth 200 million but i think he may have a little trouble finding a buyer when he goes to sell tho..

If in this hipocrate country had ever been justice for the people and by the people, he should be living in Herculaneum, Missouri so he could clean the mess he created.
It still is a great bussines for him but it is a living hell for the americans that lived there.

wow is very very big house but sorry not for me!

  • Tyler

Again, in response to some of the comments. This article is about the size of his house. HE may be a despicable person, but that’s what the discussion was supposed to be about. There is nothing wrong with going big, there’s nothing wrong with going small. We are all different and have different dreams and different wants. I’m curious about the ones who say “as a wealthy person” and then continue to criticize him for his use of money. The fact that they can say “i am wealthy” when they push the idea of “starving kids in africa” baffles me.

It seems to me that if they followed their own logic they would not be wealthy, but donate all their money to these poor people around the world. And live in a shelter comprised solely of things they need in life.

Something tells me these types of commenters probably don’t live in a house of less than 500 square feet.

    Pot calling the kettle black?

  • Responsible capitalism

Being wealthy and pushing “starving kids in Africa” as you put it is exactly what it’s about. I don’t think anyone here has said you can’t amass some wealth. I think what some people are saying is that there’s better things to do with your money than building a ridiculous house/shrine for yourself in this day and age, when we know all that’s wrong with the world. I can’t believe this “baffles” you???

Have you no sense of what’s going on with 90% of humanity? Look around we should past Roman times as they proved to not work.

    Cheers!

  • Tyler

I think everyone gets so heated because they skip over my main point, the title of the article specifically says that it’s about his big house. NOT how he is a bad person and ruined the environment, people’s lives etc.

    With that in mind…

I am fully aware of what’s going on with humanity. Believe it or not, my political beliefs are very liberal.

Saying a house is a “shrine to yourself” is a bit bazar. I’m not aware of many people in the world who are still building “shrines” to themselves. That’s a bit Egyptian B.C.

Forget for a minute that it’s Ira Rennart and pretend that it’s Saint Joe Schmo. If he wants a big house, LET HIM HAVE HIS BIG HOUSE.
I would hate to think that I ever lived in a country where I wasn’t free to make choices for myself. That’s a scary idea.

I feel there is a lot of narrow mindedness about the whole big house thing. If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times:

Everyone likes different stuff. Why so much judgment because people choose to build a big house? Some people like corvettes, some people like hondas, but it’s better for the world in general if we all ride bicycles. Are we now going to start condemning everyone who owns a car? It’s all the same type of logic.

All I’ve been saying, over and over again, is that if Joe Schmo likes big houses. Why can’t he just have what he wants. If it’s not hurting anyone, then there shouldn’t be anything wrong with that. I don’t care whether he needs it or not, because most of the stuff we have in this world today are not things we need, so that argument is completely irrelevant.

And you are completely right, there ARE better things to do with your money. But that goes for 90% percent of everything we spend our money on, not just houses.

We all do things with our money that make us happy. Some people buy cars, some people donate it, some people buy clothes, some people buy art, some people go to college, some people invest it, some people save it, some people build big houses. It’s all different and it’s a beautiful thing in my mind that it can be.

I’m sure anyone who takes a step back and looks at it from my position will realize how I could be offended by this:

I want a big house, obviously it will not be anywhere near this size, but regardless I want a big house. I want to be wealthy, I want to be successful. My closest friends are from some of the upper echelons of society and we have all been discussing ways to help the homeless in our surrounding counties because our area has one of the highest homeless populations in the U.S. We especially plan on pursuing this when we’ve graduated from college and they’ve gotten their inheritance and I have my architecture degree. That is literally ALL we ever talk about lately. In fact one of these projects is already underway with funding, investors, etc.
And I’m just not going to stand for someone telling me that I’m a bad person because in my future I plan to build a big house. That frankly is NOT the case.

…If that’s not responsible capitalism I’m not sure what is

  • http://www.orlandorealtyexperts.com Orlando

When I hear the term McMansion, this is not the type of home I would think of. We have one here in Orlando, Davis Siegels’s 90,000 square foot house in Windermere for sale as is $75 Million.

This man is pure evil. His businesses in Peru have ruined the surrounding towns and killed many innocent people and the money he made was used to build this castle. I don’t think most of you understand so I’m going to make it very simple. There’s only one pie to feed the world, ok? This guy and the rest of the uber-weathly .1% own 85% of that pie. The rest of the planet, 99.9%, have to fight over the remaining 15%. Doesn’t seem like a very realistic plan to feed the world right? Oh by the way, unless you are a billionaire you are fighting with 7 billion other people to get your sliver of what remains of this pie. The point is: while you fight for capitalism and the right to be this wealthy these guys are living your and thousands of other people’s “American Dream”. Good luck and enjoy.

Never followed the Ira storys.Never heared of him. But “lucky me” he now is the New owner of the company that i work at.
    The home is beautiful…….
How wonderful it must be to live as grand as he. With no care in the world.
To just be able to lay my head down just once without worry, in peace,….. if only.
Maybe Ira will turn things around for all of us “little people” down at the point.
    We will see

This is America and if this self-made billionaire wants to build a mansion of any dimensions, that’s his right in a free democracy. Everyone complaining wouldn’t hesitate for a moment if he gave them some of his wealth.

Some of the comments here reflect pure envy.
