Get your macho on for a home once owned by America’s ultimate tough-guy, John Wayne. Listed for $2,263,000, you’ll see that the home is far from macho, if it ever was.

Described as “Versailles style” by Lansner on Real Estate, Wayne’s former Newport Beach, CA home offers 4,448-sq ft of living space and sits on the 4th tee, overlooking Big Canyon Golf Course.

The listing description is as follows: “Enter through a gate into the front courtyard with a fountain and walk through double glass doors into an elegant entryway and light-filled formal spaces. The two-story living room has floor-to-ceiling windows, parquet floors, marble fireplace, and custom artwork. The newly remodeled kitchen features a center island, double ovens and butler’s pantry with secret passage. The formal dining room opens to the garden and is graced by a custom console designed by John Wayne himself. Three fireplaces, a master suite, dark wood paneled den and maid’s room are on the main floor. On the second level there is a balcony and two bedroom suites with spa baths. The pool spa and gazebo are surrounded by lush gardens. Overlooking the Big Canyon golf course this sophisticated home offers complete privacy and unobstructed panoramic views.”

This home has had two owners since Wayne; the last sale was in 1998, for $895,000.

It’s amazing that in all of the years since Wayne’s death in 1979, his popularity has not waned. As recently as 2008, Wayne placed third in a Harris poll as one of “America’s favorite film stars,” even though he made his last film in 1976. See more celebrity real estate news.

    Wow! Very beautiful home!

  • John |

That is a very feminine house for somebody like John Wayne!

  • Jen@ Polly Pocket Lot

Wow, it is a gorgeous home. I cannot believe the increase in value on this one. And I agree with John, not exactly a ‘John Wayne’ style, but he has not lived here for so long, I guess it makes sense. With that history, though, I am sure they will sell it!

    Nice house pilgrim.

I never shot nobody I didn’t have to.

  • Carol

John Wayne will always be my favorite movie star. I wonder what the house looked like when he lived there.

  • Scout

I have the Architectural Digest that featured his home circa around the time of his death in 1979. His home was definitely NOT effeminate then. This is the current owner’s taste level. Knowing what his home looked like originally, this looks like a blown up version of what is currently popular now.

Then, his home was rich, opulent and decidedly masculine with lots of original Remington sculptures.

You keep forgetting he slept in the barn on the north end of the property.

  • Carl

A feminine house for the Duke;” that will be the day”.

  • Mike

That’s because the original house was Sacrilegiously torn down and this house was built in it’s place.

  • Mary

Very Warm and Inviting. Very much his personality.

  • Gregory Franklin

You wouldn’t have to ask me twice to visit. I can see myself having a drink with the Duke next to that grand fire place.

  • Marion Michael

Where’s the hay for the critters?

  • Newport Realtors

The house looks like a dream. It is very nicely designed and decorated, anyone would just love to stay in here. Many people would love to purchase it for John Wayne as the reason.

  • sue ellen

Does the furniture come with it? LOL

If the “feminine” look has anything to do with Wayne ownership, I think you would find it is because Duke never lived there. He lived on the waterfront a couple miles away in a home now torn down; My guess is this is the home Pilar Wayne moved to when she and Duke separated. Just a guess.
