Mariah Carey Makes Offer on Beverly Hills Mansion
By: Diane Tuman, Zillow Content Manager | March 19, 2009
Yes, the Fleur de Lys (”lily flower” in French) is a humongous Beverly Hills mansion, but on top of that, it is considered the most expensive estate in the world and pop star Mariah Carey and husband Nick Cannon are making a bid to buy it, according to Luxist.com. It is listed for sale for $125,000,000 by Joyce Rey of Coldwell Banker Previews International.
Texas billionaire David Saperstein built the sprawling 45,000-sq ft home over five years in the 1990’s, allegedly for his ex-wife, Suzanne, who is presently the owner of Fleur de Lys.
Interested? Zillow Mortgage Marketplace calculates a monthly mortgage payment of $525,790 based on a 30-year fixed loan at 4.82% with 20 percent down (according to rates March 19). No doubt Mariah and Nick can easily afford that.

It a great move far both of them . I would recomend squeeze the seller a little (nigo). put up alittle more than 20% have the seller pays all closing and transfer expences . It is a great acquisition , more of this should happen Stevie

Ah, so nice to see in this age of growing unemployment, rising homeless numbers, and daily news of financial scandals that some people are not afraid to embrace excess and live it up.
A half a million dollars a month mortgage. My goodness, how many people that could help/feed/clothe/house.

Lets bid on the landscape account?

This house is NOT in Beverly Hills - it is in Los Angeles, zip code 90077 (also commonly referred to as Bel-Air or Holmby Hills).
neil on March 20, 2009 9:34 pm
if they put $25mil down, a $100mil loan will be what, $600k a month, $1mil/month with taxes and maintenance. At 50% tax rate, the first $24million per year of their earnings go toward this house. For a couple years maybe, how long are they going to continue to make this type of money, not 30yrs! Buy a $20million place in Beverly Park @15k sq feet dummies and pay cash.

I think its cool to think big , dream big , and invest big ! However the only afro-american entertainers , that can really afford this house is Will & jada / jay & beoynce ! and they dont need a loan to buy it !!! Also i believe they could actually build this house for around $ 45 million !
ObamaOGR8T on March 21, 2009 8:01 am
CHANGE….you can believe in.
Maybe they can arrange govt. finance for this one!
With a 0% interest rate ……….Oh yeh…when they default Geithner can issues more TALF and bail them out. I guess B.O. needs a house in California.

You would think people have learned from other rich fools from the past: Hammertime (MCHammer), Larry Holmes and Holyfield, Tyson, and other fools who had and then lost all of it! Stupid I say!
Charlie on March 21, 2009 11:30 am
If they can afford it and want it, then do it. Who are we to tell someone what to do with their money. Its funny how everyone thinks the rich should help everyone.
Janet Keyser on March 21, 2009 3:09 pm
That is just over the top and then some to pay that much for a home. Gees!
Butch on March 21, 2009 6:44 pm
Mariah Carey really has that much money? It’s a shame someone so annoying can be so rich. He face is so smackworthy.
StopHatin on March 21, 2009 7:22 pm
It is funny how people who do not have the money they wish they had to afford these types of purcahases are the first to post such hater garbage…what if it was Donald Trump/ tori Spelling who was to make this purchase?.. do any of you know the reason behind why at such a time in history would they even consider to purchase it? ..Do any of you know there full financial capabilities? ..Are you up their asses with a microscope examining every penny they are making?..NO!! If you idiots have not noticed most wealth people do not have their real net worth public.. I find it a joke when you yourself could not conceive the idea of ever owning such a property of such value, you are so quick to beat down those who are working hard to create their own little heaven here on earth, because you are living in your own hell…All the talk about do you know how many people that money could help,, Idiots do you not think they already do help people THEY JUST DO NOT REPORT ALL THEY DO TO YOU!! If the day comes that GOD blesses you to be able to have wealth, like those who really have wealth, not from a lottery, but, by by hard work you tell me @ that point you would not BUY WHAT YOU WANT..It is really none of our business what they chose to do with their money they struggled, and work hard for it… It should not matter to you what they want to do with it as long as they are not using it to create wars and harming other human beings..Pay more attention to your own life and maybe then you will begin to understand that “Hey reality check…. The truth in life is, I only live once. This life is all that i really know, I do not know of anyone physically that has died and came back years later to start their life again where they left off, So if i make it and i want my heaven here i will do my best to create my own heaven while i am alive”..
Cindy on March 21, 2009 11:28 pm
2 people in 45,000 square. Let see…the amount of energy to keep this place going for 2 people who may or my not spend 20 percent of their time here and have other homes in other locations, which they fly to in their private jets. Is it just the “common” person responsible for going “green”.
I am so sick of celebs I could scream. Get over yourselves. No I am not jealous..I would never in a trillion years be so indulgent. I feel sorry for anyone who feels this is an option. These things never last, it will be for sale in a few years when the thrill of having this thing turns into self reflection and realization. Hope when it does you do not feel the need to buy a 50,000 square foot home.
Dom F on March 22, 2009 3:57 am
Helllooooooo, Why are we talking affordability?? Have you checked out Mariah Carey’s net worth on wiki ???…………estimated at 225,000,000. She can pay cash and still have a good nights sleep…
booya!!
fred on March 22, 2009 6:14 am
It’s my understanding Mariah was adirect recipient of the stimulus package. Obama signed off the check for the property so they can help boost the economy. In 8 years they will be having the most extravagant hip hop and R&B parties and reverend Wright will be giving sermons in the reception hall twice weekly.
Teddy Bear on March 22, 2009 7:51 am
One of the problems in the world today is there’s no shortgage of judgmental people like so many of you here.
That’s right I said it.
If these people have the money, are able to afford it, then who is anyone to say what they should or should not do?
Seriously think about that for a moment before some of you go riding around on your high horse.
Since when is it a legal requirment that someone with money support the poor is show benevolence to the hungry?
A lot of you people say you wouldn’t do this or you wouldn’t do that, but you know what? STFU, that’s what, because until you are actually in the shoes, you really don’t know what you would do, and that’s a fact not up for debate.
If Mariah wants the house and she can afford it, then good for her, I won’t sit here and judge her actions. I sincerely hope her decision brings her happiness and I’ll leave it at that.
Why do I say this? Because one day when I’m rich, I don’t want you judging me either.
Think about that.
Scott on March 22, 2009 8:56 am
Right on Mariah! She earned her money and can spend it however she wants. Why should she be responsible for other people? From everything I’ve read, she’s worth well over $200 million, so she’s not breaking the bank here. She’s a true and talented diva and deserves to live like one.
Rosario on March 22, 2009 9:45 am
Hey people…leave this women alone. She deserves it, she work hard for this and tell you honestly i’m jelous of her, i wish i had a mansion like that. I know everybody in here would only wish to have what mariah have all that money and aBIG HOUSE.You know something if i had that type of money my house would be bigger than Mariah and still help the poor…maybe i don’t know last time i check its a choice we shoud be gratful for the ones who does help the poor.
P.S. Mariah your music is not that great, but your very beautiful and enjoy your new house hope it brings alot of happiness.

Does it have an attached garage?
what what in the butt on March 22, 2009 4:37 pm
oh come on! is not THAT expensive, and i have seen doll houses larger. i don’t understand why mariah has to stoop down this low, i mean, this house is ghetto!
Big C on March 22, 2009 5:47 pm
What is the legal description of this house? How many BR / BA?
Its just interesting to know the details…..for example how big is the avg. bed room in this size place?
If they choose to spend their money this way…. more power to them. If they can get this place at a steal for $125M in a recession or better yet $120, maybe when people start making lots of money again, they can sell it to the next Madoff character that comes around for $200M. You never know
Edward on March 22, 2009 6:28 pm
The mansion has 12 bedrooms, 15 bathrooms, 35000 sqft living space, 140000 sqft lot, 7 fireplaces, pool, theater, library, 7 car garage, 3 stories, tennis court, 50 rooms total, built in 2002…

StopHatin is one of those bizarre new world protestant capitalists. I can’t believe that people are so stupid that captialists convinced them that the reason rich people are rich is from hard work and the favoritism of God. That was the argument Louis XVI and all the Royals of Europe used on the public from the dark ages through the revolutions. By 1776 Americans weren’t so stupid to go along with that and by 1789 the French weren’t so stupid. The British monarch’s motto is still Dieu et Mon Droit - “God and My Right” meaning that the monarch has a right to the country, to rule it as he or she sees fit because God gave the country to the monarch.
People are SO STUPID. So many Christians pray for money and social status and a raise and a new car and they have these ridiculous preachers who go on TV and tell people to pray for material goodies. It’s incredible. I don’t doubt that 70% of all American Christians have never read the New Testament and instead merely read small passages for conversation.
Jesus was a radical, a revolutionary. He said it was quite unlikely people with a lot of money would even get into heaven. The meek shall inherit the earth. He was all about the common man. He was all about spirituality and not about getting a big house and a big car and lots of stuff.
I can see praying to Jesus or to God for something to eat if you are hungry, or a safe, warm place to sleep at night if you haven’t one, or for freedom from physical pain, for the health of your family, but to pray for BLING is something only a grotesquely disfigured postmodern American Christian could pray for. It is a manifestation of deep psychological and moral contradictions. It is a contradiction of Christian morality itself.
Postmodern capitalism has proven so powerful that it even owns God now. God works for capitalists. God is the one that gives them their wealth through blessings because God likes BLING too! God wouldn’t be caught dead driving that old Datsun pickup. No way. If you’re down with the Lord, the Lord makes sure you are decked out in Louis Vuitton and a fine BMW.
Stupid people who want to manifest the appearance of being in God’s favor apparently borrow a lot of money and buy stuff in advance of God actually giving them the money because God must have been involved in some bank’s decision to lend the chosen debtor of the Lord. That is to say that God lends to the chosen and then if they remain in God’s good favor, he works out a comfortable repayment plan for them.
I fear that many American Protestants will be taking their own lives soon. Why? Because they ridiculously believe it was God’s favor that allowed them to borrow so much money and so now that they can’t pay it back, it must mean God’s pissed at them and doesn’t like them anymore. After all, if this postmodern Christian argument works consistently, it would mean that all of the people he loved and lent money to, if he still loved them, he’d not have caused their home prices to crash and made it impossible for them to be rich. Right?
To some extent, the real estate debacle must be God’s manifestation of displeasure with the way Americans have chosen to live. If God controls all things and is master of the universe, then what other explanation can their be?
Or maybe we’ve been reduced to a nation of obese, untalented, desperate, vain, consumer junkie idiots who also are as superstitious as the serfs of the dark ages. I’ve placed bets that it’s the latter.
Fred on March 22, 2009 10:34 pm
Also, anyone worth $200 million who is buying a house for $100 million or more is an absolute idiot. I could see someone worth several billion buying this house, but it is truly stupid for someone worth only $200 or $300 million to buy such an expensive home.
They are revealing their ordinariness by spending half or more of Carey’s total wealth on a home. Luckily she gets royalties. Unfortunately investment bankers will be able to get her to sell the right to those too once she gets in too deep.

Anyone who purchases a home this year gets an $8,000.00 tax credit from the government that doesn’t have to be repaid, so I think they should go for it.

Unfortunately, the tax credit is only for 1st time homebuyers. Sorry, Mariah.

Typically the ultra-rich always save money avoiding morgages and pay in cash…. personal lawyers contact the real estate agent(s) and negociate a deal. I am guessing her new (soul mate) is a yes-ma’am kinda guy :).

Gluttony is one of the 7 deadly sins. No matter how much you have and how much you spend in will never bring happiness! Mariah Carry needs to give more of her money to people who are less fortunate rather than but a house that 40 families could easily live in. It’s times like these when I realize that America’s priorities are totally out of wack! We pay celebrities and atheletes way too much money in this country. They deserve to be rich but no-one should be this filty rich!
Vanessa | Prefabricated Structures on April 5, 2009 2:03 pm
Even I can’t say it my dream home because it is more than that. I am wondering what celebrities want to do and what they do actually. I think they can spend all that money to do something more useful and beneficial for the world. Anyways, that’s too much.

A.) Mariah & Nick cant afford this house….and
B.) Zillow mortgage marketplace calculates a 30 yr fixed rate of 4.875% w/ 20% down? That is 100% impossible. You could put 50% down on this property and no lender private or institutional would touch it, and damn sure not at a sub 5% cost of capital.
JP on September 8, 2009 11:45 pm
This house is just another excuse for the rich-off-of-inheritance or divorce to flaunt their bank accounts. Which i know it’s nowhere near my business to tell anyone in the world how to spend their money, but, i just think it’s kind of ridiculous for someone to build a hotel for a house, spend $125,000,000 for something thats about…10 times too big for even the worlds largest family, when some people sleep in the street out in the rain. I’m not rich, and not poor, but I would def never squander away hundreds of millions just to brag to everyone how rich I am. Just my pinion…everyone has one, and they should all be respected in one way shapr or form. Thanks
