This isn’t a story about an Extreme Makeover home that the owners could not afford, or that went into foreclosure, but rather a story about a family whose marriage broke up and, as a result, the home must be sold due to Washington’s community property law. Even though the Windermere listing states a price of $650,000, the home is allegedly down to an asking price of $550k.
In a report by the Kitsap Sun, the Kirkwood family — Dawne and Michael and their five children — received their Extreme Makeover in 2005 after they were living in cramped conditions due to black mold infesting their home. Dawne and Michael divorced this past August, forcing them to sell the house. The house looks absolutely gorgeous — take a look at this Windermere slide show.

Wow, that is pretty sad. Only 3 years later and their life together is over. I’m guessing they’ll come out okay on the sale, since I’m pretty sure they had the mortgage paid off too.

I’m new to investing(so new I haven’t made any money yet) but I keep hearing about stories just like this, it gets kinda depressing.
What I’m being taught is not to think about the sadness of all of the situations but rather concentrate on how you can help people without taking advantage of them.
I’m new so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Shawn:
1) Don’t even think of “buying” a house in Florida.
2) Buy low, sell high.

All extreme home makeover recipients should have to sign a contract that if they do sell the house they receive no more than 10-20% from the sell of said house reuiring them to rethink the size and type of home this show builds. These houses are way too much for the normal family to keep up.
They should not profit from the generousity of so many people who donated supplies, time and expert help to make this home. With these stipulations the remainder of the ’sale’ money could be donated back to the community, lower the price of the house substantially, or any number of scenarios that would work.
Families who have these homes built for them and for some reason or other have to sell or leave the house should in no way shape or form profit from it.
And in the case of this house this couple will not have a huge windfall, after only three years, to claim in moving on. They would move on with the small amount they would have had had this house not been built for them—as it should be.
