We chatted with John and he revealed some of his secrets:

Zillow: Why are you successful as a real estate agent?

John: I communicate with my clients – and other agents – quickly and efficiently. Extensive online marketing, including Zillow and a host of our own websites, gives me a commanding presence. Most importantly, I really care about my clients and feel responsible for their well-being in this process. That is something people notice. If I were only focused on my commission, it wouldn’t work.

Zillow: What is the best part of your job?

John: The satisfaction I get from making a difference in the lives of clients, by helping to guide their decisions and happiness. I also enjoy earning gratitude and respect when working with my agents to grow their business. Being successful in real estate is not easy and when I help someone get there, it is satisfying. There’s nothing better than great teamwork!

Zillow: What is your No. 1 tip for agents starting out on Zillow?

John: Be quick, be responsive. People are impressed when they hear from you right away and your chances of working with them diminish with every minute that passes until you contact them. It can be tough on evenings and weekends to jump on email and make phone calls when not focused on work. I always try to call, email and set up a property search within 5 minutes of receiving a lead.

Reviews are also key and they don’t have to be clients or completed deals. Most clients I ask to review me do. Complete your profile and focus it on your audience, not yourself. Give them useful information, like links to helpful local sites and recent sales. The more you provide the better.

Zillow: What is the best compliment you’ve ever received from a client?

John: The very best compliment, of course, is referring someone they really care about. Someone said to me recently after a problem discovered a year after they bought their home, “You are successful because you are always there for us,” they said. “John Wells puts clients first. He listens and understands clients’ needs and expectations. Then he delivers. He is highly efficient and responsive. John is the consummate professional.”

Zillow: What are three words clients use to describe you?

John: Responsive, knowledgeable and patient.

Zillow: When you’re not selling real estate, what do you enjoy in your free time?

John: Boating on the Merrimac River and the ocean, cooking, writing and travelling.

Zillow: How do you stay active in the local community?

John: I’m involved in local politics and the chamber of commerce. I created an online magazine about living in my city and promoting local writers that has become very popular. I write op-ed columns for the local paper. We are lead sponsors and participate in a number of important community events.
