Zindex World Series

Welcome to the 2007 Zindex World Series!
BaaaaahhhhSTUN! For you Cleveland fans, we won’t even mention the third-base coach’s name or infer that his blown call sent the Indians into a tailspin en route to a 11-2 loss in the deciding game of the ALCS. And we also won’t bring up the fact that you guys are at the epicenter of the mortgage meltdown. We feel for you, Cleveland! But, time to make room for the Boston Red Sox vs. the Colorado Rockies in the World Series that begins Wednesday.
Leading up to the Series, we thought it might be a little fun to do a little Tale of the Tape and toss out some numbers, comparing Denver (home of the Rockies) to Boston (Red Sox):

Wow, it looks like Boston in a landslide! Boston’s numbers dwarf Denver’s in almost every way except for median household income, which is a number sorely out of whack with the rest of the figures on this chart. Please keep in mind that these figures are from the 2000 Census and are part of neighborhood data that we have for most major metropolitan areas of the country. Find your city here and see how the numbers compare. As you can see, Boston won the Zindex World Series, $410,211 to $211,282, but don’t rule out the little guy on the field in 2007; Colorado is known to punish in mile-high ways.

I’m going to root for the underdog in this series. I think it would be awesome if Colorado won the series - though I know Jeff S would disagree

Boston may have the upper hand in payroll, Forbes value and Zindex, but let’s look at the other tale of the tape: The Rockies won two out of three games against the Red Sox at Fenway this past June. They outscored Boston 20-5 in three games. In the battle of the aces, Jeff Francis beat Josh Beckett 7-1, giving Beckett his first loss of the season after he started 9-0. Just saying…
But, all that aside, the matchup proves to be a great one: two teams on individual hot streaks (Colorado 21 of their last 22, Boston pulling their usual come-from-behind ALCS win); the hot-hitting NLCS MVP Holliday going against the sick-nasty ALCS MVP Beckett; two legitimate Rookie of the Year contenders in Tulowitzki and Pedroia defending the middle infield for their respective teams; and two great managers in Hurdle and Francona battling it out, among other things. All that being said: Go Rockies!
After all, at Zolve we know what it’s like being an underdog. And it remains to be seen whether the BoSox can handle the thin air and snowballs of the Mile High City!

I agree wholeheartedly that this is lining up to be an epic series. Numbers abound in a matchup like this, as evidenced by both our own data analysis as well as the one on Yahoo Sports (or was it ESPN?) the other day running sabermetrics comparing the two teams (Boston came out ahead). And of course Vegas is in the mix, with 2:1 odds on the Sox at the moment.
All that said, one can’t deny that anything in October is possible. What the Rockies have accomplished this year is nothing short of amazing. So amazing, in fact, that they made ESPN’s Rob Neyer’s Top Ten Baseball Miracles of All Time. Unfortunately, the numbers here work against the Rockies as well; while they came in at #3, the 2004 Red Sox came in at #1 :).
Granted, this is a different Red Sox team, but I’m still betting that if anyone can douse the red hot Rockies, it’s these Sox.

Hard to believe that the median income in Boston could still be anywhere close to under 40k! It must be significantly higher than that by now. I suspect that the income growth in Boston far exceeds that of Denver in 2007.
