I am so sad to hear the past parent reviews about Gonsalves. Elementary. My daughter went there from 2004-2011 ALL her teachers Mrs. Surh Mrs Hwanbo Mrs. Song Mrs. Mato Mrs Brickner And Dr. B were very good.. She learned so much from this school and prepared her. I can proudly say she is in English and Biology Honors and has excellent grades. I feel if this school didn't challenging her she may not be doing as well as she is. I was in the Booster Club for two yrs as Co- Treasure and enjoyed it very much. We had an excellent president. and staff All the events were planned well and my daughter and I had A LOT of fun. When I think back on those past years at Gonsalves I can honestly say I miss them. Michelle Wilburn

I hate this school. Though the API scores may be high it doesn't mean the teacher should be working with children. I am soon moving schools because of certain teachers. I hope parents that are thinking about entering their child in this school take the caution that your child will get a lot of homework and not enough recognition by teachers. This school is said to be great but soon it will fall to the ground.

This school is an Excellent School. All the teachers my daughter had are well caring and well educated. Of course every where you go there are few strict teachers but that is needed in the school. Many of the teachers go beyond their duty to help and improve the kids. My daughter did not have a teacher assigning extreme load of homework. The parent involvement is excellent and could not ask for more.

Overall Gonsalves is ACADEMICALLY outstanding. Socially however it lacks a lot of life and spirit. There needs to be a healthy balance for children to be well-rounded. PROS Great test scores. Teachers challenge students to their max abilities. School campus is extremely secure fenced/locked all day. Adults have to enter through the office. Once a month there is Sack Lunch Wed. K-6 eat at the same time; parents bring food/enjoy this hr with their children. CONS Some teachers (K) have unrealistic expectations. There is a lot of "correcting" and not enough praise or recognition of students' hard work. The amount of nightly (and wknd) homework is excessive. The environment at this school feels military and robotic. Overly and unnecessary disciplined. I have witnessed the yelling and lack of patience by some of the teachers. The principal doesn't seem to be too involved. He controls traffic after school but rarely says hello to the parents (or students). His speaking time at school functions gets cut off by teachers and Booster parents who seem to love the microphone and stage.

So far 2 years into the school I am very pleased with the school. At first I thought was moving a little slow for where my children were from pre-school. Now I find it to be an overall great experience. There is a lot of homework compared to what I remember but times are different. As all of us parents fight through the rigors of corporate America we can only hope that our children are prepared for the future. Living in such a nice community as Cerritos my children will have to develop the drive and street smarts that often is taught by having tougher times and places. As a parent I know that s my job to develop but I can be assured that as my children go through school they will be well ahead of the normal child going through the average system.

This school is excellent! The teachers care so much about the education of our children. The kids are expected to complete a lot of work but because of it they learn so much and are ahead of many kids their age!

This school offers great activities and highlights (like mom-daughter day dad-son day sack lunch day where they invite parents to dine with children on campus). However TOO MUCH HOMEWORK does not mean greater test scores. These children are saddled with 4-6 hours of homework per night (even in 2nd grade!) How can you offer events like sack lunch day to bolster family relationships but then turn around and pile on so much homework that family dinners are IMPOSSIBLE because there is no time due to the overkill homework load?? If they get burned out in elementary school HOW WILL THEY EVER make it to junior high or high school -- or college? Some teachers seem deaf/blind/dumb when you bring up this issue. I graduated valedictorian from HS and with honors from college. I have a PhD so I know about homework -- and this is TOO MUCH and MEANINGLESS.

Goodness I don't know what happened to the other person who complained about our wonderful principal. But as far as I'm concerned--with 3 kids at Gonsalves-- Mrs. Ross is the greatest principal. She is very active polite prompt and easy to approach and talk to. She has done a great job and still is doing a great job. Keep it up Mrs. Ross!! If anyone is looking for a great school in Cerritos look no further and come to Gonsalvez.

I am so disapointed in the principal this year. She has turned a wonderful school into a living nightmare for my child. The teachers are beginning to show the same type of behaviors...this school needs all new teachers and a new principal

Greatest Schools! Grizzly Gonsalves! The approach guidance and prompt report about the kids to parents were the things which I admire. Everyday the color of the child's bear is a measurement to find the progress. Money spent is really worth. 100% Satisfied!! Long Live Gonsalves and Staff! Best Wishes for all the other schools too to give all the kids in the universe a better place just like Gonsalves!

Gonsalves Elementary is an awesome school from my experiance. I heard from one of my frined & I was confused to buy a home or not . Finally I made up my mind for the sake of school & bought it. Now I feel so relaxed by seeing my child improvement over the last 2 years.Apart from academics cultural activities extracurricular activities the after school day care is very nice. Its like a homely feeling. Even though I am at home & want my child to be at home she says she doesn't want to come home because she enjoys over there a lot. Overall I can say the school is like a family for me.The parent teacher invlovement is superb. The principal participates actively in all the evernts.

I happen to really like our new principle. I feel she is very approachable and easy to talk to. She takes the time for that And also wants to enforce the safety for our kids. If only the parents would do their part and pay attention to the flyers that are sent home regarding crosswalks and parking. I for one support Mrs. Ross and I'm glad she is at Joe A Gonsalves.

Teachers are helpful encouraging and very supportive. Booster club...Amazing...great job! Planned activities are above and beyond what I expected because of the effort the parents/teachers put into the school. The new principal this year still needs to learn 'the warmth' that emanated from the former principal and needs to listen to parents and not insist on her way is the best. Otherwise the current principal will lose a lot of her support from the parents and her excellent staff.

I cannot express how happy we are that our son got in this school. We transferred him from a private school about 3 weeks ago. We are very pleased with the school work and the way teachers and students have made it so easy for his transition. In addition he always comes home happy and excited to do his homework. I commend the people who make this school very successful. The principal/teacher/parent involvement is very vital and everybody is doing their job really well.

Gonsalves Elem. is an excellent school. I've had 2 children go K-6 and cannot imagine that any other school could top the experiences we've enjoyed. evry teacher we've had was phenomenal the principal is intelligent supportive and warm and approachable. Academics are very strong. I do wish they had their music teacher on site with them more and I would have liked if they'd started a language (spanish french...)Parent involvement is tremendous. Students are completely prepared for California Standards tests. Safe warm 'family' atmosphere. Can you beleive that the Principal seems to know almost every student and family name!
