Compared to other Chesapeake schools Thurgood is very lacking. We have encountered some wonderful and caring teachers. We have also encountered staff that is quite rude. One of my daughter's teachers has a horrible attitude and is uncooperative and unpleasant if I try to communicate with her about how my daughter is doing and what they are learning in class. There was no orientation before school started. When they did have an open house a couple weeks after school was started it was very unorganized and we did not have the opportunity me meet all of my daughter's teachers. The PTA from what I have seen does not exist though I am technically a member. It is almost as if the parents are being shut out. I have not even seen any opportunities for parents to volunteer. There are hardly any extra activities for students to participate in. There are not even enough students to make up a gifted class in my daughter's grade At her school last year her whole class was gifted or a fast paced learner.. It frustrates me greatly that we have the misfortune to be in this district.

I have one child that went to thurgood after we moved from another city and she could not read they taught how to read in 2 weeks. She has been progressing every since she is now in middle school and in all honors classes. My son now attends and he is doing work above his grade level. This is a great school with great teachers. They are a family.

My two youngest boys attended Thurgood Marshall from 2001-2006 and I was very pleased with the teachers and administration. The teachers really care about the progress of the students and encourage the parents to be involved in their students career (which I was!). We loved Thurgood Marshall and will greatly miss it!

My son attended this school from Jan. 2005- June 2005 due to the fact that Georgetown Elementary was over-crowed. I would like to commend his teacher Mrs. Mary Harper for a job well done. She genuinely cares for her students and their education. She teaches the pre-school class for children with developmental delays. Mrs. Harper made me feel extremely welcomed to visit and observe her at anytime. (which was done several times) She is very informative and will assist in any way possible. When my son started he was very inattentive and barely spoke ten words. His vocabulary and attention span has improved dramatically. Mrs. Harper is a SUPERB teacher! I am very happy that my son was about to attend her class. Also the Teacher s Aide was awesome as well.
