California Standards Test (CST)

In 2011-2012 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

I love Corky! Teachers are wonderful. I get emails and notes about any situations I need to attend to. But mostly it seems very positive and pleasant. When my kid can't wait for summer to end I know he is in a great environment. If there is a negative it is the parking and traffic in and out of there ... I just go early enough to miss it!

The Principal and Vice Principal are wonderful!! They really take the time to listen and help make the school a better place to be.

I've had three children attend this school in the last 9 years and have had only positive experiences with the staff and the academic aspect of this school. They have an excellent overall enrichment program from social skills to education.

My daughter began kindergarten without knowing all of her letters and her numbers only up to 10. She didn't know how to spell or read. The school year is half way done and she can identify all of her letters write sentences and knows most of her numbers up to 60! The teachers really are interested and active with the parents to help children succeed. The PTA and the school hold lots of events and the parent community is very supportive. There are quite a few military families here so there are many friends that could also help your child transition to the new school. The principal is new this year to McMillin but he's got a lot of experience and he is very pro-active with the students. I honestly feel that greatschools.org should have given this school a 10 but the proof can be seen in my daughters' dramatic improvement.

We have the best students and the best parents!!!!

I have been both a parent and an employee at Corky McMillin. I could not be more proud of our staff and our involved parent group.

We have the most cohesive staff and administration working together with the commited goal of student well-being and achievement. Our students are not only immersed in quality instructional strategies toward academic excellence but they are also socially conscious citizens. Our Peace Patrol Service Club and Ability Awareness programs make our campus safe and appreciative of community and diversity. And to top it off our PTA rocks! The parents at McMillin support all that we do with great fervor and vision for future generations. To say that McMillin Elementary is a great school is truly an understatement. PTA

Corky McMillin has a very diverse community yet we all work together to strength the programs at our school and enhance student achievement. I'm also proud of our PTA ELA and volunteer programs. Finally the teaching staff if top notch and very hardworking. I love this school!

I originally wanted to send my kindergartener to another school in Chula Vista. McMillin does not have a full-day kinder which is one of my few complaints. The teachers are caring and hold my child to a high standard she has learned a lot in just a few months of kinder. The principal seems to be very involved and also holds the children to a high standard. The PTA seems fine . . . when I look at other reviews that have complaints about the PTA my comment is . . . if you don't like it get involved and do something about it. These moms (and dads) are nice enough to volunteer their time to support our school. Don't complain if you don't want to be involved. I work full time and can't contribute much but I certainly do what I can and appreciate the others' time and effort.

my son is the last of my children to graduate Mcmillan this year. I love the supportive staff. I love the family and community pride and togetherness the school offers.

McMillin Elementary overall is a good school. I am disappointed that there are no music programs available to the students or even offered after school hours. PTA is spoken of highly in other reviews but I feel that they have no originality in their programs and fundraisers we see the same year after year same parents same programs.

This is an outstanding school! There is a true feeling of family and community. Teachers go above and beyond the call of duty because of their dedication to their students. The teacher of the year Mr. Barnes is truly deserving of this title. He not only teaches a full day starting with the STAR program before school but also coaches soccer/basketball and teaches Science club with Mrs. Disharoon after school. Again a phenomenal school!

Looks as if the last review was written by the principal or the PTA president. This school just started a 'STAR' program to help students who struggle with reading. Finally! The parents are still 'clicky'.

Impressive school with active involved parents and dedicated teachers. There is a strong PTA presence as evidenced by their many school projects and number of volunteers with strong PTA leadership also a plus. Especially noteworthy this school has a comprehansive plan for addressing the myriad issues encountered by students with learning challenges. The educational support staff to include school Psychologist and Speech Therapists are strong assets.

This is my child's first year at McMillin and I must say how discouraged I am with the overall attitude of the principal as well as the lack of special programs in place for children who require extra help in certain subjects.

This is my first year with corky mcmillin and i'm very pleased with the teacher's and staff.

McMillin has friendly caring teachers as well as a principal who goes out of his way to get to know each parent. This is a great school!
