Standards of Learning (SOL)

In 2011-2012 Virginia used the Standards of Learning (SOL) tests to assess students in reading, math, and history/social science in grades 3 through 8, in writing in grades 5 and 8, and in science in grades in 3, 5 and 8. The SOL tests are standards-based, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Virginia. The goal is for all students to pass the tests.

I was a teacher here in the early 1980s. I got my start in my career here. I am so pleased that Washington District is still doing so well. It was a good school then and apparently still a good school now. T. Cole

WD is a great school. I do not have chilren in the school but I am a former employee. The school did have a high turnover rate but teachers are like everyone else in a bad economy they hold on to their jobs. So I have several points to make in response to several of the reviews. There are up-to-date textbooks in every classroom in addition textbooks are not a sole resource. In fact any educator will tell you that they serve as a poor excuse for a curriculum. So the fact that the teaacher uses worksheets means nothing. Also every students is provided with an assignment book at the start of the year and every teacher writes the homework on the board and the students are to copy it. The parents also have to sign off on the books so if there is a test they should know. Good school.

WDES is a good school. I wouldn't say it is exceptional or amazing though. The staff is competent. However there is a high turnover rate for teachers. The principal Mr. Cook is involved and readily available. I feel my child is safe at school and is getting a good education. The class sizes are small. Supplies (texts technology) are more than sufficient.

I agree with the review(feb. 2004) on a few points. The communication between staff and parents is not up to par.If the test results from the last few years are any proof then this school is worse then even I thought! the school is not on the same 'level' of teaching that my sons last school was but W.D. is in the middle of nowhere with few resources to draw from. In this age of technology it doesn't even have it's own web site at least if it does I can't find it.

This school has good discipline. I feel my child is safe. I am concerned because I have not seen textbooks used. Reproduced black and white print outs are used instead of textbooks. I have seen a few workbooks. Even the Science Class has no text. This makes it hard for students to study for tests. The children in lower grades have a problem keeping these loose hand outs together. Also there is usually no notice to parents before a test is given. A parent can not prompt a child when they don't know when or what material is being tested. Asking for this information has brought no results. In general I have found communication to the parents to be lacking. Also math and science is combined in one class period-not enough time is allowed for each of these subjects. Physical education art and music are taught on eight day schedules instead of weekly.

I had children in Fairfax County Public Schools (which I believe to be a very good school system)and except for the extracurricular things WDES is as good or better a school as any we have experienced as a family. I am impressed with the Arts and Language program especially. I hope WDES will have a Gifted/Talented program soon. Kudos to the staff! I feel extremely confident in their abilities to care for educate and nurture our child.
