As a parent in the neighborhood I have been watching this school for years. The past school year (2013-2014) I have seen tremendous progress. My husband and I recently met with the principal and she was beyond impressive. There is no question that her leadership is a huge part of the new success that this school is having. We are now convinced that this school is well on it's way to being an exemplary campus and a coveted school for many parents to enroll their kids. We are going to be the first pioneers from the neighborhood to enroll one of our kids for this upcoming school year. We are so excited about the things to come for DISD and in particular for this gem of a school located in our own urban neighborhood.

The positive energy and the relentless understanding that all children can and must succeed is what strikes me whenever I visit Tom C. Gooch Elementary. The administration and staff are committed to an immersive learning environment that sets the expectation for excellence. I have read many less than flattering news articles about DISD mismanagement but Gooch is an example of DISD administration at its finest...when committed educators are empowered to guide children to success.

The new courtyard garden is a great contribution to the learning of scholars. The Gooch community and Real School Gardens came together to build this wonderful instructional garden. The students are greatly engaged in learning activities like observing the lifecycle of butterflies and growth of the caterpillars measuring the perimeter and area of the sand boxes personally planting and harvesting vegetables drawing temperature trackers reading rain gauges among other instructional dynamics. The garden has two outdoor classrooms shaded by trees and integrated into nature with tree trunk stools. Students value the outdoor reading sessions and science classes with hands on learning.

As a service director I have been volunteering in the district and sending high school students to volunteer as well for over 20 years. Gooch has attached more than 60 of our volunteers on a consistent basis to the tune of over 2000 hours. Gooch is doing all the right things to make their students successful. Mark my words the neighbors will be flocking to this little school in no time because it will be a DISD standout school in a very short time. The teachers are outstanding and the principal is dynamic. I am thrilled to have a front row seat to watch the transformation - as well as watch the eyes light up of the volunteers who see first hand how their time equals better scores and academic enthusiasm for the children.

The teachers at Gooch always commit 110% to their students. They go beyond the call of duty to make sure that their students are reaching their fullest potential. Their community involvement is impeccable as well! I have visited this school on different capacities and I must say that each time I was impressed with the overall climate/culture exhibited at this elementary school. Keep up the good work!

The teachers at Gooch focus on three main levers to drive growth on our campus Data driven instruction (DDI) the combination of observation and feedback and school culture. The practice of DDI allows teachers to tailor instruction to the specific needs of each individual scholar. Teachers use demonstrations of learning and a variety of assessment tools to determine the strengths and growth opportunities for each scholar and are then able to use that data to target skills and plan instruction accordingly. Frequent observation of lessons and timely honest feedback from instructional coaches to instructors maximize DDI by calling for reflection and growth. However for true data analysis and reflective instruction to occur behavior and effort expectations need to be in place and reinforced consistently. Our scholars and staff have made great strides in their abilities to persevere and display a growth mindset. They are learning to understand that intelligence achievement and successes are directly tied to the amount of effort grit and determination exhibited. It has become more than an exhibition however but rather a belief a way of life a representation of their being.

Great teachers that are engaged with the kids and go above and beyond to show them different ways of learning.

I've only visited the school as a participant in their exceptionally organized career day but I was extremely impressed to learn about all of the initiatives in place to further the quality of education received by the students. And the efforts made are working! Test scores have improved the kids are exposed on a daily basis to the concept of higher education as an attainable goal through hard work and perseverance. The leadership and staff at the school has put enormous efforts into this transformation and are clearly passionate about providing the best learning environment possible for the advancement of the students. Is it a perfect school? Not yet. But there's clear momentum forward.

One of our main goals at Gooch Elementary School is to establish high expectations a growth mindset and the belief that anything is possible. We believe that all scholars can learn and develop the academic skills necessary to graduate from high school college and career ready. We set high academic expectations and teach our scholars to show effort and perseverance in their pursuit of academic excellence. Each homeroom is designated as a college or university and the banner of that college or university hangs outside the classroom. Our morning community meeting provides an opportunity for scholars and teachers to recognize each other publicly. Teachers shout out scholars who have shown effort and perseverance and made academic progress. Scholars shout out teachers for the various ways they have helped them. This has established a strong sense of community and mutual support and positive encouragement.

Over the last two years I've been to Gooch several times as a volunteer (both to read to the 4th grade class and to help in the school garden). Each time I have visited the school I have been greeted by well behaved eager-to-learn students as well as friendly intelligent teachers. Each staff member I've encountered appears dedicated and willing to "go the extra mile" to ensure these children are receiving a top education.

I still don t understand why the data of this fabulous school has not been updated. We have formed a great team of parents teachers and alumni whose team work has reflected on the students. This school year cycle 2013-2014 Tom C. Gooch has surpassed the district s scores by 30% to 40% and a total transformation has taken place in only 18 months with the hard work from all the team. Tom. C. Gooch is definitely the best option for our children.

My daughter has been attending this school since kinder and every year it has improved. Especially this past year with the new principal she has made a lot of positive changes. One of them is recruiting community involvement and creating initiatives to help enrich student learning. She brought the AVID program and added after school enrichment clubs. She has helped the school in many ways like applying for grants to improve the school. The community has provided donations of school supplies and beautfication projects inside and outside of the school by volunteers and the help of Lowes. I can't wait to learn about all the new programs and clubs for this upcoming year.

The new principal has made a lot of positive changes and has added many after school enrichment clubs. She brought AVID to our school and stresses the importance of character counts. She ensures ALL students are treated with respect.

This school has changed alot. Information is sent home at the last minute. Whenever I try to meet with the principal she is never available when I did meet with her she kept going off topic talking about her teachers. My daughter is always coming home telling me about bad kids. This takes away from her learning. My kids will not be returning to this school.

I think the teachers and staff of the special education classes are excellent . The general ed students are very inclusive with the special ed children. The teachers and ta's lead by example.

Although it does seem to be a very good school the students are treated with lack of respect especially the children in special education classes not only the teachers but by all other staff members.

This school is a really good school. My daughter is really doing good thanks to her Pre K teacher Ms. Yanez.
